In November last Lieutenant-Cdlflnel Bernard Freyberg, V.C., who so signally distinguished himself at Gallipoh, was seriously wounded whilst leading an atttack againet the German forces on the British front. The courage and elan which lie showed on that occasion were loudly praised, and full credit was given to the dashing New Zealander for the valuable work he accomplished on that occasion. On learning of the , exploit, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luko) wrote to Lieutenant-Colonel Freyberg, and conveyed to him the proud congratulations of his fellowcitizens. To that letter the Mayor yesterday received the following reply: ; "The Hood Battalion, "Royal Naval Division, "February 25, 1917. "To the Mayor of- "Wellington.
' "Please accept my thanks for the kind messages sent by you on behalf of the citizens of Wellington. They were delayed, and only arrived to-day. I am back in command of my regiment, and find it sadly depleted. We are occupying the- same sub-section in which I was wounded on November 8 and 14. Conditions are very hard at present, but otherwise life here is very complete. The strategic impresse here at present ie most interesting, but cannot be discussed. lam quite fit again. The only remaining evidences aro a silver right elbow and an inclination of my head to the right. . My leg, thank goodness, is normal. Again, many thanks for your kindness. —Yours sincerely, (Sgd.) Bernard , Freyberg, Lieutenant-Colonel (the Queen's 'Royal West Surrey Regiment)."
