THRILLING DESTROYER BATTLE

ODDS OF THREE TO-ONE

A MIDNIGHT EXPLOIT

DESPERATE CONFLICT ■ IN THE WEST ■

BRITISH ACHIEVE FRESH SUCCESSES

OFFENSIVE IN THE BALKANS

The outstanding feature of the news to-day is the thrilling account, published by -the British Press Bureau, of the destroyer battle in the English Channel, Briefly referred to in previous reports. The flatness of the statements of the official report has given-., place to a. glowing narrative, that kindles the imagination, of the dashing initiative and daring displayed by the oommanders of two British destroyers, which, sighting six of tho enemy's destroyers in the darkness; promptly engaged them in a thrilling action, and worsted them. On the "Western front the great battle initiated by the British, and accepted by the Germans, ebbs and flows in a series of desperate en-, gagements at various points. The Germans have been terribly punished by the British artillery, and their persistence in counterattack is evidence of the importance placed by the German High Command on the Hindenbtirg line. The Belgian front is also active, while on the French front German attacks have been sharply dealt with, progress being maintained at the same time. The Allies on the Macedonian front have initiated an attack whioh bears the appearance of a definite offensive.
