NOTES AND COMMENTS. ', IBt Gwsncoe.V The imported horse Panmure is still being' woVced at Awapuni, and if ho can keop 'him on his legs G. Prico intends to race him on the second day of tho next Manawatu lujjcting; Tho president and secretary of the Racing Cotiforence are still in tho city in connection with tho proposed reduction of racing. Nothing has so tar transpired as to what took place at tuo meeting of the Conference Coninmteo and the Cabinet, which • was hold on Tuesday. - • '
Several horses had reached Awapuni bei'oro the decision to postpone the meeting was made, and they had then to return home. .Amongst the number was the Auckland-owned Luperino, who was expected to show up well in tho hurdlo
races. Tho committee of the Manawatu l»acinfc Club held two meetings on Tuesday and ono yesterday, when it was decided to apply for May '16 and 17 as dates for tho postponed autumn meeting.. It is hoped that by that time tho Railway Department will have obtained sufficient coal to allow the carriage of racehorses. Even if this is not so, the meeting wilt l>e held, as several prominent Hawfcee Bay ownors have giwn an assurauco that their bor?.s3 will be walked to the meeting. This will remind old-timers like R. Gooseman and J. H. Prosser of the davs when they regularly walked their teams, to meetings on each coast. The Egmont Racing Club lias received excellent entries for its winter meeting to be held on May 9 and 10. Amongst the entries for the Hack Hurdles nre several new aspirants for iumpins honours, notably Postillion, Sunbird, Tyson and Splondidus. Included amongst the list is several horses from Auckland and be Hamilton district. It will not be a difficult .matter'for the Auckland 'Joreea to got to Hawera, ns they can go by boat to New Plymouth and.the rest ? of the journey by road can be done very comfortably in two short days. The Hamilton horsee may be absent ns they are in a different position, having a walk at both ends'of the boat trip. In any case there are enough entries from Auckland, Hawera, New Plymouth, and Wanganui to ensure a successful meeting. Some g of the present-day might not like the idea of horses on the road, but m .parts; of tho Dominion journeying to a meeting byroad is very' common. For n "^.f Levin horses regularly walk to Otaki and ike versa. Krdell horses alwaysiwalk to Wanganui and home again, and iiawVa and New Plymouth horses have to walk to the Opunake meeting. In tlio opinion of- many, the horses .are better • for tho few days off the track, and they thrive wonderfully on. the ohange. The well-known liandicapper Mr. 0.. Morse underwent a serious operation ft Aucknnd on Tuesday last, and at laleat advices his condition was critical. The Wanganui Jockey Club has decided to race-as usual on May 2a and .6. Entries for all events close on I'rtday night.» '..-.:.'. "•■' ~ , ■]? Tiller, with t-lio two yearlings whicti he bought at tho Randwick sacs, is expected to arrive in Wellington.next week. A 5 there will bo somo difficnlty about getting the youngsters to_ Fordell, tbei.r owner (Mr.. W. Duncan) is trying to ar'i-ango for them to be turned out here for ;a few. months'. . \ Accordihg to the latest Sydney files there was not a for Rinaldo when he was put up for auction in-Syd-ney, and unless F. Tillcy has succeeded in selling him privately, the eon of Charlomagno II and- Demcter will be ■brought back. A typical example of what Now Zealand, stables are doing in those times of stress is furnished by the well-known Fordell stables. As is well known it is the biggest stable of its class on the coast: At the present timo its hands number, just under two-dozen, and not one of them is, eligible for the First Division and only one is qualified to go up for medical examination-m the Second.JJivision. Sinne the commencement ol tno war there have boon, cloven enlistmoiits from' this stable. • ' ,
