LABOUR AND THE POLLS
Though afc time of writing . the •full returns are not available, it is already clear that the official candidates of organised Labour have fared very badly at the local bodies' polls.. This is. largely due to the attitude of so many., of the leaders of the Labour movement towards conscription, and no doubt the conduct of the coal miners has not been without effect. In Christchurch all the forces of the- anticonscription and militant labour /section were brought to bear to win the Mayoralty. It has been a desper-ately-fought struggle, in which the' strongest possible anti-conscription Labour candidate, Mr. J. M'Cohbs, M.P., was chosen to % db battle" with the rotiring Mayor,' Mr. Holland. The citizene of, Christchurch are to be congratulated on the emphatic fashion in which they disposed of the anti-conscription nominee. Mr. Holland polled over 12,000 votes to the 5000 odd polled by his opponent —a smashing defeat, indeed,' for what might be tormed the professional Labour group. A late message from Greymouth/ whore the struggle also raged round the conBcription issue, states that there, too, anti-conscription Labour candidates have failed to win a single jeat. In Wellington at time of writing the Labour candidates arc certain of defeat for the City Council, but the complete figures have yet to come to hand. The result should be high'ly satisfactory, to citizens ■ and should not be without its lesson to the rank and file of organised Labour, who are singularly 'Cniortunate in their choice of leaders.
