RETURNED SOLDIERS' HOSTEL
The following ia an extract from the annual report of the Returned Soldiers' Hostel:—Since the hostel in .'Newtown has been opened, 13,921 meals and 4724 heds have been supplied and paid for. Also 1931 meals and 685 beds were supplied and not paid for. These were supplied to men who hecame stranded in the city from as far as Invercargill. In some cases soldiers were sent to us by the War Belief Association, with an order for one. two, or three weeks' board, .then ,left on our hands to be turned adrift. We are thankful to say that with a few exceptions our trust has been rewarded, and the men have improved in their habits, and we hope will eventually realise their responsibilities as citizens. Of the great bulk of the soldiers who have passed through our hands, we feel proud to know that their health is firmly re-established, chiefly owing to the excellent care of our matrons and the good food supplied them. Returned soldiers, whilst awaiting Medical or Pension Boards, have been accommodated from all over the Dominion, several of whom were without sufficient means to last until their pensions had been paid to them. We feel that the hostel has more than justified its existence. The Crippled Soldiers' Hostel Art .Union would like any person near the centre of the city who would help the cause by keeping one live sheep for a few weeks to communicate with Box 839, G.P.O.
