KARORI'S FINANCIAL POSITION
' REVIEWED BY THE MAYOR POSSIBILITY OF REDUCING TAXATION Last evening at Karori, the Mayor (Mr. G. H. Burn) addressed a small number of ratepayers on the financial position of tho Borough of Karori. Mr. 0. J. Dascnt, a former Mayor, occupied the chair. Mr. Burn said that tho position of the borough financially was of the best, and ho hoped that during this year instead of raising the taxes thoy would possibly bo reduced. The financial position as set out by him allowed that for tho past year tho total expenditure amounted to £3981! 16s. 5d., and the receipts to £3706 13s. 6d. Besides this there were outstanding assotß amounting to £337 12s. 2d., und comprised as follows:—General rates, £80 os. 9d.; metal accounts, £52 3si 4d.; miscellaneous works, £19 18s. 1d..; outstanding rent lor recreation reserve, £100; motal on hand, £30; concrete blocks on band, £37 10s.; timber on hand for metal work, £18; leaving a credit balance for tho year's working of £68 lis. iOd.
In tho No. 1' tramway tho receipts amounted to £5284 os. 2d.', and expenditure to £'1176 13s. 2d., leaving a credit balance of £1107 7s. On the No. 2 tramway, which runs from the Council Chambers' to tlio Park, tho receipts totalled £1742 ss. 3d., and the expenditure £1399 15s. 10d., so that £2o< 10s. 7d. had to be ransforrod to the account from tlio general account. The loss on this lino was tlio lightest yet, as tho Park was in increasing demand, and the tramway more used.J The statement of public debt as read by tho Mayor'showed that on No. 1 loan of £4000 the accrued sinking funds were £3554 10s. 6d.; on No. 2 of £2000, tho accrued sinking funds woro £1079 lis. Bd.; on No. 3 loan of £2000, tho accrued sinking funds woro £1425 13s. 3d.; oil No. 4 loan of £37,000, tho aocniedl sinking funds wete £4529 15s. lid.; on No. 5 loan of £17,000 the accrued sinking funds were £2072 Is. 3d..; on No. 6 loan -of £2000 the accrued sinking funds. were £179 Is.; and on No. 7 loan of £26,000 the accrued sinking funds were £1696 3s. 7d. The total indebtedness of tho borough was £90,000, nnd of tlio accrued sinking funds £15,127 Os. 2d. Ho reported that tho Karori Borough Council Commissioners had invested £3454 in war loan certificates. , Street improvements Was another matter dealt on by the Mayor. These included! 74} chains of concrete curbing and channelling and miscellaneous works foV ratepayers to the extent of £570. During the year 37 building permits of tho value of £13,473 and £65 12s. 6d. fees had been granted. Speaking in connection with, tho building, tho Mayor stated that it was not going ahead at any great rate in Karori, hut still thero was somo building going on.
