London, April 23 The prompt hammering we adminis-. tered. to the Germans in the Channel fight was due to the speed and_ armament of two of the newest British, destroyers. The engagement occurred ninety minutes after the raid. The GBS belonged to the newest German class,,of the fastest type, powerful, and heavily armed. Owing to the speed of the Germans, magnificent skill was required to bring them into bat-1 tie. The fight.was then soon over, the fusillade lasting fifteen, minutes. Two of the enemy's ships were sunk within five minutes.—The "Times." GERMAN OFFICIAL VERSION (Rec. April 23, 7.30 p.m.) ' London, April 23. The German official version, of the raid states: "Our destroyers advanced towards the mouth of the Thames and effectively fired 650 shots at short range at the Dover and Calais fortresses: Not sighting the enemy on their return, a. portion: of our forces turned back, cruised over the ground again, and encountered the enemy' 8 destroyers. Sharp engagements followed at short distances. One of the enemy's ships was torpedoed, and the others were shelled and heavily damaged, one probably being sunk. A portion of our ; forces advanced towards the Thames, but did not meet the enemy—only merchantmen, and prisoners being cap-tured."—Aus.-N.Z. (Cable Assn.-Eeu-ter. > • ■ .
LOSS OP DESTROYERS ADMITTED. (Rec. April 23, 6.30 p.m.), London, April 22. I' A German, .official report states: I "After the naval engagement,on the 1 night of April 20-21, east of Dover, our destroyers GBS and G42 were reported as lost."—Aus.-N.Z.. Cable Assn.-Reuter. '" GERMAN REPORT SHORN OF ITS LIES. (Rec. April .23, 7.30 p.m.) '. London, April 22. The British Admiralty how denies that any of the British destroyers were sunk, or even seriously damaged. The only British force in contact with tho enemy consisted of the two destroyers who'were acting as leaders. The engagement lasted a few minutes, and the remnant of the enemy escaped by flight. The merchantmen and prisoners claimed to have been captured .were three of the crew of an abandoned barge.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.Reuter. A NEW GERMAN CRUISER London, April 22. Tho Imperial War Conference unanimously adopted ai resolution moved by Sir Robert Borden (Canada), and seconded by Mr. Massey (New Zealand:— "That tho resolution adopted by the Imperial Conference of 1907 be modified to pormit of India being fully represented at. all future Imperial Conferences, and that tho necessary steps be taken to secure the assent of the various Governments in order that the next conference may bo constituted in accordance therewith."—Reuter.
