TO-MORROW'S ELECTIONS

No elector should fail to record kis or her vote at.to-morrow's poll. Local bodies' elections naturally do not excite over, much interest at a time like the present, but it would be a great mistake for citizens to neglect their fluty at the present time, and by so doing permit a sectional interest to secure control of local government affairs. This is especially the case in view of the attitude of some at least of the candidates who are offering themselves in the name of Labour. We have always held that organised Labour as well as all other sections of the community should be represented on our local governing bodies. But unhappily on this occasion, in face of the grave crisis with which the country is confronted through tho attitude of a large section of the men engaged in the coal mining industry, some of the Labour candidates for municipal office have refused to range themselves definitely on the side of the law and on the side of their country on the question. In' spite of the fact that the miners 1 strike is .a breach of the law; in spite of the fact that it is liable to cripple the country's efforts in the war; in spite of the fact that the strike if continued will bring hardship, loss, and suffering to thousands of people, some of the Labour' candidates when approached on the question yesterday were evasive in their replies or refused to dcclaro themselves against the action of the coal miners. At latest advices the strike to be abandoned, but the attitude of the candidates referred to remains on record for the guidance, of electors, and should brand such candidates as unfitted for the offices . they are seeking. Citizens cannot go very far wrong by casting their votes for the retiring office-holders. The Citizens' ticket and the Greater Wellington Town-Planning and Municipal Electors' Association ticket both have' Special claims to consideration, and the inclusion in the latter of Messes. Norwood, Swan, Chilman, and Shorland_, who are not retiring councillors, will no doubt find favour with many electors who like to see some new blood introduced at each election. But what wo would urge on citizens as of foremost importance is that they should make it their business to vote. They may not have any strong views regarding the claims of individual candidutes, but they.owe it to themselves and to the city to see that sound and reasonable men and women are elected to administer their affairs.
