lhe Masterton Golf Club opened its season on Saturday last with a mixed foursome, which was on by D. M'lntosli and, Miwss M. Harris, with a net scoro of 52. The Commissioner of Taxes, was present at a meeting of the Fanners' Union in Mastea'ton on Saturday, and gave a most instructive address on the subject of farmers' taxation, 'having special reference to the tax on excess war profits. Tho Commissioner stated that it was not proposed this year to send out individual notices to farmers. The responsibility of obtaining forms and filling them in rested with farmers themselves. He advised farmers to fix a standard valre for their stock, and stick to it for taxation purposes. In answer to a qnestiou, the Commissjoiiei' stated tuat the expenses of running a niot/Sr-cari used exclusively in conjunction with a farm were allowed in making returns for tho excess profits tax. ' . The proposal of -the Masterton County Council to erect a toll-gato on the Mastortoii-Castlegoint Road is exciting a jrood deal of comment throughout the'district. j At a meeting of tlio Hydro-electric Investigation Committeo, held in Masterton on Saturday, it was decided that tho time was inopportune' to engage the services of an expert to report on tho load and reticulation. The Masterton branch of the Farmers' Union has passed a remit for the provincial conference:—"That a • graduated land and income tax bo levied in place of the existing excess profite tax,"
