WELLINGTON AUTUMN MEETING

THE CONCLUDING DAY .v KILBOY WINS THE GOLD GUP DESERT GOLD RUNS THIRD SEA?OWN SCORES' AUTUMKf HANDICAP

'.The Autumn Meeting of the V/ellingrf ton liseiiw Club concluded on Saturday in perfect weather and before a very large crowd. Speculation was good, an/4 {h'tf-eum of MS.ibi 10s. was handled, as a'»ainsS JMf1,742 for the eecond dRy last year. The! total for the meeting was .£76,358 10s:, as against .£71,390 10s. last

year. '. The big handicap provided a very tine wee, but the honours pf tlio contest *ent to that great performer, Chortle, *ho, burdened with 9st. 91b., was : just! benltrtl by Seadown, who was ili receipt of 301b. The top-weighthad all ttte bad! luck, and Keid did wonders to gefc'Jbiny

The Gold Cap" brought together the classiest field ever seen at headquarters. -It contained the -wonderful Desert GoW,- heroine of all tba weigh t-for-age races, fifew Ivilboy, A.J.CV Deity winner, The Toff, a CJ.C. Derby winner, Snsiinof, a Melbourne Cup wmner and Great Northern Derby winner.

It Vas the finest weight-for-ags race ever seen on' the course, and the winner weli descf«-ed Ms victory/ The-time recorded! was excellent; considering the dead track. Prince Delaware touched a very short price in.the Jumpers' Flat Handicap, fo2 whicli all tbo acceptors went to the post. The support wae justified, and- after waiting with the field for half W» journey the. favourite then came away Bud won nicely. : The form worked out conrcctlyv for Sir Solo was second, while Maryland just beat Blackall, with the others beat-, en off. .'•■■'■ Teka, Pacific Slope, Sir Agnes, and Psvriform werß missing when the field paraded for the Hutt Handicap. The Kilbronet gelding Killard, who had Dee-' ley in the saddle, was made favourite, despite an ungenerous preliminary. At the start he refused to leave until the

field had gone a furlong, and this, was, the end of him. Down tfcs back Tango , ■, and Botanist led. Montana /and ' Good Hope. At the half-mile the Isii-named fell away, and Mascot joined Montana. At the bottom:of. the straight Hdaltap and Golden Graf ton came on the scene, ; and the Blenheim horse, finishing strong , - ■ „ ly, won by.-a bare length, Tango was half a length .away, and <3ood Hope and Mascot come next. ■ ' . ■ . ■.-.-:' Despite her failure on tlio 'first da.r, Miiltaine was made favourite in tbeliii-* ritai Handicap,' from which Kilkee'and. Nobleman were withdrawn. The favourite jumped out well, but Thames carried her along at a smart pace; and the pair were in trouble two furlongs fromhome. Johnny Walker, dashed to the lead at the- half-mile, but entering tha • straight Hendra came round on the onteide and the issue was eoori beyond doubt, the Hastings gelding..winning easily from Sardinia,. who lost several lengths at the barrier, and then got, up in.time to get second place. Johnny Walker was a head away, followed by Thames, Altercation, and Sunny Climes. .The winner was a better horse on Sat* urday, and the first day's race evidimtlji improved him. All started in the Autumn Handicap except Tango, who had raced earlier in the day. The issue was regarded as verj , open, several of the contestants carrying over four-figures. At the start, which was ,a good one, Bunting and Eewi Pota were slow to move, while Chortle, got squeezed out. Going out of the straight! Menelaus and Trials led Multifual. and'. Fiery Cross.; Trials stumbled on'ithe tai. and was. nearly, down. ' Down thelwek,. Trials was-still in charge from.Menelaus and Captain Glossop, with . I'iery Cross handy and Bunting moving up ■ fast, while Chortle and Bjornebor? whipped the field. At the five furlongs the positions were unchanged, but the field, was more compact. At the half-mila Multicipal showed up with Trials, while. Menelaus lost his position. Entering tho ■.straight the whole field bunched, and 6hortly afterwards Kewi Poto and Eery. Cross shot out, while Chortle camo fash on the outside. > Over the last hundred yards whips were out on the leaders, and in the lost stride Seadown got up and beat Chortle by a head, while Rew* Poto was the same distance away, ana in a line came Fiery Cross, Bee, Multicipal, Teka and Menelaue. It was one of the finest finishes ever seen on the course,, , and the winner, who is owned by a , popular steward of the club, was well y received. Hβ was a bit lucky to. score/ and with anything like a decent run' Chortle would have won. Bunting was' another horse that did not get too soott a passage in the straight. •' . r"' Vagabond was a better favourite thart . Gamecock'in the Pacific Handicap. Ati (he start Ample and Noir went out fast, and the latter interfered with Vagabond, who wae sent to the rear. In the straight Ample held i his own from Bonny Maid and Vagabond, both of whom came fast. Birkenvale and Pervolo were tho next! to finish. '"':...■.

Bee was the only .withdrawal from.tha Gold Cup, for which the public favourite was Desert Gold, who: was tetter prefer- 1 red than the bracket, Kilboy and Saeanof; In the birdcage the top-weight saddled up well, while Kilboy appeared , to be better for'the race he had on the opening day. Sasanof also looked well, as did The Toff. In the preliminary, Kilboy moved with more freedom than was the case in the St. Leger. :As they. ' Taced on to the course proper Desert Gold was several lengths t>2 Kilboy, with the other pair in the rear. Passing the. stand Kilboy had run "up to ' the mare's quarters, but there was no paco on. Deeley kept Kilboy up on the back stretch, where O'Shea on Desert Gold had the mare wide out, evidently to get the better going. At the half-mile The Toft retired from third, and Sasanof took his place. Entering the straight ' Kilboy and Desert Gold were together, and both were doing their best. Kilboy. forged ahead two furlongs from home, > and The Toff, fighting on gamely, came a»ain and: headed Sasanof and Desert Gold, arid just struggled home in front of them. Kilboy won comfortably. Des- . ert Gold had dropped back to last, but "ot up in the last few strides, and secured third place. The winner was well received, and it was certainly the best contested Gold Cup ever run at Trenthain. 'The times for the various distances were: 6 furlongs, lmin. 16'3-53ec.; 1 mile, lmin. 435ec.,; 1$ miles, 2min. S 2-ssec.; li miles, 2min. 31sec.; full die-, tance, 3min. 28 1-Ssec. The Thompson Handicap winner, Shrill, was a good favourite in the Sub-, urban Handicap, and after being prominent in behind Croesus to the distance she then shot out and won nicely by two lengths from Lady Black and Buller,. ' who finished together very fast. Croesus ■was fourth, and then came Koesian and Branibletye. The imported mare, who has been under suspicion for a long . time, broko down in the race. Beltano was prominent early, but ho' covered a' lot of ground and was well back at the finish. -..."■■■■' ■ .•/-"•■-" -

The biggest dividend ever paid litTren-* tham was forthcoming in tho' Belinont Handicap, when out of a very big pool only a fen' investors fancied thcchnnces'of the" locally-trained ' Trickery. At the start Kilkee, who was a hot favourite, ■was nrominent just behind Comment, Kawsikore. and Ribble. .At tho distance the field closed up, and in a great finish Trickery crossed the line a headMn front of Eawnkore, with Galore a hend away, and Matty and Ribble in a-^iiie.
