THE AREA UNDER WHEAT
STATEMENT BY HON. W. D. S. .;.. :; MACDONALD..... , ..,.'; j By Telegraph.—Press Association. : '■ Christcliurch, April"22. The Hon. AV. D. S. Mac Donald stated last night-that he had no definite information yet , as to the total acreage, that was to be sown in wheat, but judging from the applications received for seed wheat, indications were • very promising . that the acreage required, about 250,000 acres, would: be sown. He hoped to have a census taken at the end of June to ascertain the extent of the autuinn sowing, and in the eventof the acreage- not being sufficient to make a strong appeal for spring sowing. In some districts farmers had promised to increase their areas under wheat by 20 per cent. He thought farmers realised the position, and intended to assist the Government by putting in a3 much wheat as possible. : As a result of the appeal to farmers, it is expected that fully 2000 acres will be put down in wheat in the Wairarapa- this season.
