AMERICAN SHIPBUILDING. ■ Steel merchant vessels buiWing or under contract to be built in private American shipyards in January 1, 1917, acoordins to builders' returns to the Bureau of Navigation, Department of Commerce, number 403, of 1,495,601 sross tons, the largest tonnage in the history of American shipbuilding. During December, 1916, American yards finished nine steel merchant viiseels of 24,363 gross tons, and made new contracts for 29 vessels of U's,120 gross Mns. Builders expect to launch during the current calendar year 357 vessels of 1,250,722 gross tons; those which -will not be launched until some time in 1918 amount to 46 vessels of 244,879 gross' tons. TJNION FLEET MOVEMENTS. • Tlie Karu, -which arrived in port last evening 'from New Plymouth, is to leave for the same port aeain this evening, and is receiving cargo until noon. The Jfonowai, as anticipated, will not get hero until to-morrow, from Auckland, Gifhornc, and 'Napier, and will receive cargo on Monday for Lyttelton and Bunedin. On arrival at the latt<y southern port she will withdraw from the coastal service .owing to the coal trouble. : The Kahika is duo here to-day frora Onehunga. She will call for bunkers only, and will leave for Picton to lead chaff for Onehunga. . Mr. D. 11'Beaa, third engineer of the Kamona, has come ashore, and has been replaced by Mr. 8. E. Buchanan. ■ Mr. P.. A. Grons, as second mate, has joined the John. It was not definitely decided yesterday whether the Opawa would leave here for, Bkinheim to-day or, whether she would remain until Monday. In the meanwhile sho is set up to leave at 8 p.m.'to-day.
The Himitangi should come off the slip to-day, and is timed to leave hero on Tuesday at noon for tho Chatham and Pitt Islands. She -will risit Katongaroa, WTmngaioa, Owenga, and Pitt Island, missing /the call at Waitangi. The Calm hoe been delayed in the south, and is now duo hero this morning. 6ho will leavo hero to-night lor Wanganui. The Te Anau came out of dock at Port Chalmers last week, and repairs to her main mast ivere to be carried out this week. She is to load at Timaru and Muff for northern ports, but may not call at Wellington on her -way Tip. ■
Tho Queen of the South arrived in port yesterday, and has now withdrawn from tho Wellington-Foxton service, whici is being maintained by the Awahou. With a cargo of some 63,000 feet of timber, the Defender is due here to-day from Kokitika.
