FILLING THE EMPTY SADDLES
. j SUCCESSFUL APPEAL IN SYDNEY. A striking dnd forceful appeal, for Light Horso recruits was made in Sydney one day last week, when a cavalcade of mounted men from Menanglo camp rode through Sydney's streets, each man leading a horse with., an. empty saddle bearing a notice asking that it be filled. There were not many empty saddles left when the contingent swung into Moore Street. There was a large crowd of people in Moore Street and Martin Place at tho time, and the khaki-clad Light Horsemen, with their accompanying rider in plain clothes, were- given a royal reception. At the ! head of the cavalcade- all_ the saddles were filled. Towards the tail there were some vacant. The appeal proved irresistible to quite a Number, of young men, and they stepped forward, and, to the accompaniment of cheers, climbed into the saddles Tho contingent moved through Moore Street into Martin. Place, where an appeal was being made by Lieutenant Harris for recruits for the infantry. i Lieutenant Thompson, whoso service at the front has cost him, temporarily at any rate, the use of his right arm. I roused the ■enthusiasm of the crowd j when he said, .during a speech, that the day was coming when there would j bo great work for the Light Horseman i in France. Ho touched on the ex-!, ploits of the Australian mounted men in Egypt and Mesopotamia, and said i that there were many empty saddles there to lie filled. "Soon," he con- j tinned, "the Light Horso will come into their own ill France. One of these ; days the order will bo passed along : tho British front somewhere whero tho i two armies are facing each other now. i "The Australian Light Horeo will ad- ' vance." (Cheers.) "What a thrill .that j will send through the Australians! ( And should' it.not thrill you peoplo ( hero? There aro empty saddles. Get into them, and be ready for the Order: "Tho Light Horse will advance." And when you get that order help to hunt the German back over tho Hhine, and keep him there. (Cheers.)
