Schoch, of Wellington, has been advised by the Minister oE Defence that her son, Pte. J. B. Schoch, who died from wounds received at the Somme Battle, has been awarded the Military Medal. . Lieutenant P. M'Evedy, E.A.M.C, reported ill in hospital in England, is ' a brother of Dr. M'Evedy of Welling- : ton. Lieutenant M'Evedy, who is sut- ' fering from appendicitis, was house surgeon at • Guy's Hospital, London, before going on active service. The appointment of Mr. A. M. Adams as Chief Executive Officer, Munitions and Supplies Department, is gazetted. The Her. G. T. Brown, M,A., minister, of the Masterton._ Church, who was drawn iif the military ballot this week, has- decided ''not to countenance an appeai'on liis;'behalf, and will, if he passes the Medical Board; enter camp as a private. Mr. W. A. Veitch, M.P. for Wanganui, will contest the Mayoralty of Wanganui with Mr. C. B. Mackay (the sitting Mayor). Mr. Mackay was first elected Mayor in 1906; and, with the exception of; one term, has occupied the position ever since.. The name of a former student of the Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, Mr. L.-H. Larner, who_ enlisted some months ago, and is now in camp, figured in the sixth ballot list. Mr. George H. Whitcombe, managing Erector of Whitcombe and Tombs r Ltd., will leave shortly on an_ extended trip to America, fir. Louis Whit-; combe will take up his duties during his absence. ■ . ■■
• A well-known resident of Auckland, Mr. Frank Jagger, died on Tuesday. Mr. Jagger, wEo was horn in Halifax, Yorkslnre, 74 years ago, came to New Zealand in 1859.' For some, years ha was' engaged in ' bush contraots at Matawai, Creek, Corom&ndel, but left this occupation'in 1864 to take up a contract at Great Barrier :and Little Barrier Islands, for: .the supply •of firewood to the Imperial forces." Three years rater he entered into, partnership, with Mr. Parker in the timber business at' Freeman's Bay,. later- purchased by the New: Zealand Timber Company.. In 1888, Mr. Jagger entered into, the present tannery business of Frank Jagger, and Co. • The Ministers who have, been visiting the West Coast—Sir James Allen, and the Hon. W. D. S: MacDohald—< are expected back in Wellington tomorrow morning. "Mr: R. Tait has been appointed by the City Council to the position _ot Deputy-Town Clerk. At the meeting of the City Council on Thursday night, the Mayor said that it would he necessary to appoint Mr. Tait Acting-Town-Clerk in the absence' of Mr. J. R. Palmer, and he suggested that it would' be proper for the, council to ' appoint Mr. Tait Deputy-Town Clerk, so that in the absence of the Town Clerk ha. could always take over the. duties. The proposal was readily accepted by tha, councillors, somo of whom expressed very high opinions of the merits of, Mr. Tait as an officer of the corpora-; tion. Mr. F. E. Hunt, stationmaster at' Carterton, has received notice of transfer to Ngahauranga, replacing Mr. Gow, retiring on superannuation. Mr. Hunt's ' prospective, departure from Carterton, is much regretted in the. district (states our Carterton corresv lyjndcnt).
