SHIPPING AND THE COAL STRIKE... Two effects aio noticeablo in connection with tho coal strike. Ono is that the coastal scrvicoa are ibcing dopleted ovrine to a number of the vessels being withdrawn,, and another is that some of th© vessels, owing to having to nso an inferior class of coal, aro taking longer than usual on their trips. The TJnion Company have so far withdrawn : the Maori and Komata, and 'aro to withdraw the-Monowai early next week.. There will, moreover, probably be more vcssols taken out of tho .coastal running by tho company yet. The Canterbury Company's steamer' Storm is laid up at Lyttolton, and there is no prospect of her resuming running -until the miners return to;-work. Tho majority of tho coastal services of tho Northern Company (Auckland) aro disorganised, and they will by present indications shortly have to withdraw some of their vessels. Moreover,. some of tho smaller vessels aro likely to be affected. To get coal is increasingly: difficult, and it has not hcen obtained fo.r tho projected passages of ono or two vessels. AUCKLAND HABBOim OPERATIONS. A report, covering tho operations.oi xlio Auckland Harbour Board for tho quarter ended March 31;' was presented by tho chairman (Mr. H.-.D. Heather), at the mooting of the board on Tuesday last. Tho receipts were £38,236, exceeding tho estimate (£34,725); by £3511. A comparison with the first ■ quarter of 1916 shows an increase of £103, In tho traffic department there was full employment. The storage rovenuo amounted to £2378, exceeding the estimate by £503. In 1915 tho amount of storago collected was £5972, and in 1916, £9216, .an increaso of £3244. An increase is shown in tho oversea shipping of the port. In 1917 120 vessels, of a gross tonnago of 446,332, entered tho harbour, against 117 vessels, representing 427,392 ■tons, in 1916—increaso, three vessels, of a tonnage of 18,940. Vessels outward bound in 1917 numbered 115, representing 440,137 gross tons, against 108 ships, of a tonnage of 418,315, in 1916-inOrcaSe, seven ships, representing 21,812 tons. In tho local coasting vessels there was a decrease of 233 vessels, represcntinir 22,616 tons. This was caused through tho shutting- down of the coal mines in tho north, and, although tho decrease in tho tonnage figures looks heavy, it does not really affect the rovonue very much, tho larger shipping being tho principal contributors..Tho pilotage fees last year amounted- to £10,395, and tho expenses £1992, leaving a credit balance of £8403.

■REPAITtS TO TUB WOOTTON. J!epa.irS to the steamer Woottou, •which was run Into by the Quocn of the South on Wednesday night, commenced yesterday. A fairly considerable amount of work, putting now railing, flxiiiK new ironwork, rebuilding a. portion of tho cook's cabin, etc.. will have to bo carried out, and tho vessel will havo to undergo iuspr<:tion below and abovo water to ascertain that sho.is ready for sea-. Altogether it is estimated' that the repairs and inspection will occupy about five or six davs, and it will be next Tuesday or Wednesday before tho vessel can leavo here.

The Kahika tfas to havo left Onehunga. yesterday for-Wellington, and is due here to-moTrow. She leaves early nest week for Pieton and. Onchuntrfl..
