THE GERMANS IN LIEGE
Some Belgians who have recently succeeded in making their way to England from Liego stated that there are now very few works running there, and they are limited to undertakings taken over or forced to work by the Germans. All others have' had. to shutdown, either through lack of raw material or becausethe Germans seized the necessary parts of their machinery. The Germans commandeer everything. In copper thoy take kitchen utensils,: name-plates, stair-rods even ini .private houses. Any metal above 60 kilos has to bo declared. Motors, belts and foundry frames are especially in demand ; high-speed steel is naturally very scarce, and the price fixed is high. Drills also are very rare, and,the Germans hunt them up keenly. The population of Liege holds itself entirely apart from the Germans; the hard-, ship of the working ,and poorer classes ; is terrible, and disease is becoming, more and more prevalent on account or privation. The poor subsist on the bread and. rice which they can get from -■- the Belgian Relief Committee, and beyond that on turnips and cabbages.
