during the past yclir: A synopsis of what had been, accomplished showed '■that- during the' year 248:' now .garments '.and'-.37oseconcl-ha'Hd' hud been received, and distributed were 356 new. and; 557 second-hand garments. ■ The balance-sheet'as read by the secretary (Miss M'Lood) among the receipts, subscriptions aiid- donations .amounting; to £25 ss. 3d., and Government: subsidy M .£45. "under the able supervision of Miss Jolly,, the' matron.. ..There : we're twenty Height, children in" the. home,; twenty-six; ,'bf . whom . attended■ school, arid one was bejng.t-rained, in.domestic duties.- -Sixteen were under'ten ono : is too -young to attend school, nine ; wcre,):uiider';twelve years, and three' over;'twclvo':years of age. Five had leftitlie home, and pix admitted during the year. .It-was found necessary, for' reasons ■■■ of-health and for its more efficient working,' that alterations to the liohio': should he made. The dormatories.;upstairs were enlarged, :'and-:'a' ,b'athro'pm- ( added-;' the. dining T r'oom; was :mado : -v larger, ..and . the .'dormitory' downstairs made into a cloak-room; .electric'light'was installed, a gas-stove,! linoleums and various furnishings' procured, and. much of the inside and outside'-.of-the .home was painted. Mrs. John. Duncan for their gift of £25 to help to meet extra-expenses, now the cost of living has increased; to the estate of the late Mrs. M. Stevensou for £123 6s. Bd.; to the T. G. Macarthy trustees for their grant of -£Sb' 13s. 4d.; to the Two-Garment Society for 120 articles; to the pupils of Miss Bauer's School," Eitzhcrbert Terrace -who-provide clothing for one child and give a Christmas party to the children-; to Messrs. Hurcomb and Sons, who provide a fish dinner weekly; and to.tho many friends, who, in spite of .many calls for time, thought, and money for: patriotic purposes, have maintained their interest m the homo. They .'desire'also to convey to Mr. H. Hoby and Dr. H. Kemp a deep sense of what they owe to them for their professional services, and to tho lady correspondents of Tib: Dominion, the "Times," and the "Evening Post," and' to Mr. Harvey. The gift tea was'licld on September 6, and the donations of money, groceries, and material .helped tho finances of the homo considerably. The officers for!the ensuing year are as follow:—President, Miss E. S. Greenwood.; vice-president, Mrs. J. P. Luke; lion, secretary." Miss Archibald; hon. treasurer, Miss. ALEXANDRA,HOME FOR WOMEN
Tho annual report of tho Alexandra Home for Women is as follows:—"Tho committee is glad to ho able to report another: satisfactory year. Tho ■■ garden, which, in addition ta housework and ueedlowork, . provides occupation for tho girls, is profitable to the homo, chiefly owing to the enthusiasm of the matron, './whose work in the home is again gratefully acknowledged by the committee ; .to be most satisfactory in every way:; :; Tho:matron pays a tribute to the work oft-tho nurses in the homo. It-.'is with, "great regret that the committee has-to report the -resignation of MisS:..Greeiiwo.btl as president. Miss Greenwood has- been president of tho homo _fbr the many years it lias been established, and it-- would bo very difficult: :t6' : ;over-estimate the great .value of her work to tho home during these years. 1 Mrs\- T. H. Gill lias been elected president in her place. ■ " ,
■ Mrs.; C.' Richardson and Mrs. W. B. Hudson, have '.'been' appointed to fill vacancies -on the committee .caused by of' Mrs; -Harper and Mrs/Gorkill.-Tho matron reports: '.'Wo arc very/ grateful .to' the medical staff of the Wellington Public Hospital, who, although .they vhavb.' been ; extra busy this year, and often short-handed, have, never.,allowed,us to suffer from, want of -attendance. Miss Inglis, the matron of St. Helens Hospital, also continues to he most kind and helpful .to the nurses' .when. attonding St. Helens for lectures. ■ Tho_work has considerably: increased during, the year! The district work has mor6 than doubled, and 1 is a source of profit to .the home, besides being an advailfage to -the nurses jii their training. .Several of iho doctors - have expressed their appreciation of our nurses' .'work in. .theso. cases'., They are glad to getnurses for, the district who know their work. Nurses. Kelly; Morris, and Jefferson .passed <:thei.r examinations successfully during the year, and arc now'doing private nursing, 'flic .'nurses do very good work in.the home among the inmates. The behaviour of the inmates during the- year has, on the whole, been very good, and, several letters from employers havo- been received expressing appreciation of, the girls and tlieir work;" ' ';' .: aro very grateful for tho many kind gifts of fruit, vegetables; clothing, old-lihen, etc,, that have been received during the year. The committeo would specially liko to thank the anonymous donor "Xraas".for.again romom-'. Bering the inmates at' Christmas timo, ' also;'the Two-,GarWent.'Society - for its, liberal donations • of ; clothing,-etc., which havo:boen a great comfort to many-of the: inmates. The statistics for the year ending March 31 ; , 1917, are as ■■ follow married 28, single 40, total 68; discharged, married 27, single 36, total' 63; births, male 35, fomalo 28, total' 63;"-' stillborn.; 2; marriages during the year, 10; mothers taking infants to parents' .home, 14;. mothers taking infants to situations; 10; infants committed to State-insti-tutions, 4; infants'boarded in licensed homes,' 4; district cases attended by •nurses, 80. The committee meets at tho home on tho second Monday of every; month. ■; ■Tho balance-sheet showed, among the receipts, subscriptions and donations amounting to £113 ss. 7d., grant from.Macarthy Trust, £66 13s. 4d., and' Government subsidy '£114 10s.; totalling, in. all £701 ss. lid. Expenditure for the year totalled £756 Bs. 2d,' leaving; a working. loss of £55. 2s. 3d. •, With an investment of £600 and fixed deposits of £700. less an overdraft-of £128 os. ,6d., plus £55-25. - - 3d:,. the. committee is left with a balance in hand of £1116 17s. 9d.
