■;-:■■'..■ — y—— ■■■ CASES HEARD,IN WELLINGTON." .'The second Wellington Military Se'r-< vice Board, consisting of Messrs. it W. Poynton, S.xU. (chairman/, T. A. Bauniber, and F. Curtice,* continued its' sittings in the old Parliamentary Buildings, yesterday. Captain Cowlishaw was the military representative. The Coniuiissioner of-Police appealed on behalf of six police constables. The. men concerned were: H. Blaikie (Now Plymouth); V. J. Cosgrove (Welling-, ton), B: Firmstone (Auckland), G. W. Gow (Palmerston North), S. G. Hood' (Invercargill), and T. S. Kyne (Auckland). The Commissioner stated that., the force was still being depleted by. resignations, owing to the men wish~ : ing to enlist. He was"not making any • permanent appointments,. and it, would not be' in the public interest that the balloted men should be taken away. Blaikie was a member.-of. the Second Division, and so was not liable in any case. • ; The\ board adjourned .the: appeals, sine die on the usual terms. Appeals made by the Public Trust Office on behalf of J. C. Hogan, clerk, Masterton, and L. J. Stanley, clerk, Christchurch, were adjourned for three months. It was stated that the staff of the office had been seriously depleted: ' by voluntary enlistments, while the work' in hand lad been much increased during the war period. The men could not be-spared. -■_''■ W r illiam Crawford, Civil Servant, Austin Street; Wellington, appealed on the ground of iinduo hardship. He stated that he had served in Samoa and had a brother'at the front. He had responsibilities in New Zealand. The chair-; man said that appellant was certainly, not a shirker. The case would be adjourned sine die, to be. reviewed when; the First Division was exhausted. h H. Holland, " accountant, was granted leave till June 30 on the application of his employers, Messrs. Johnston and Co. He'bad previously been rejected as a volunteer, and his farm had counted upon retaining his services. * ■ Vi i \ ' w j, M. Price, farmer, Pahautauui (Mr.'Luekie) appealed on the ground of undue hardship. He had enlisted early in 1916, and had been discharged from'oamp as permanently unfit. Subsequently he had married. He. had. a, large farm. . , . ■ ■ The board adjourned the case in_ order, that the' go before a. Medical Board. / - :"■..■ - Private K. J. 4. Kerr,. Specialists Corps, asked for his discharge on the • ground of undue. hardship- He was married ' and had three children He had enlisted voluntarily six months previously, but his wife now asked that he should be released. . , -~•-.
