JOHN DORNE SENTENCED
■ DECLARED AN HABITUAL CRIMINAL. Sentence on John Dome on charges of escaping from legal custody and breaking, entering, and theft ivas to have, been pronounced in the Supreme Court on Monday, Out was deferred till yesterday, because there appeared to be some error in the record preSShted of the . prisoner's previous convictions. Dorne, it will be remembered, escaped from the Mount Cook prison works, while he, was serving a five years' sentence, on March 17, and was recaptured on Levin Beach on April 11. He appeared yesterday before His Honour Mr.' Justice Chapman. . Mr. P. ,S. K. Macassey represented the Crown. After referring to the certified list of prisoner's convictions, His Honour said to the prisoner: "You have heard l the convictions > stated—that you have been four, times convicted of theft, and that you have been convicted of indecent assault.. Do jou recognise those as correct?" , Prisoner: 'tfes. , . His Honour: I must deal with you in. a sufficient way to protect the public. You seem to have a liking for crime, in preference to earning an honest, living,' although you are a capable labourer. On the first charge, that of. breaking and entering a whare, you.are. sentenced to two years' hard labour; on the second, also that of breaking.into a dwellinghouse, .you are sentenced'to two years' hard labour, and declared to be an habitual criminal. Those two sentences wll be concurrent, but cumulative upon the sentenoe you are at present serving. On the charge of escaping from legal oustody tou are sentenced <to twelve months hard labour. That is concurrent with the two other sentences.
