: GENERAL ACCOUNT ANALYSED I POSITION SATISFACTORY The balance-sheet of the General Fund of the City Council (not including tramways, electric light, or loan) for the year ended March 31, 1917, was presented to the Finance Committee of the council yesterday afternoon. It discloses a position which is regarded as eminently satisfactory iu view of the heavy calls upon expenditure entailed by the war. Receipts amount to .£'258,036' Os. 4d., and there is a credit balance on the year's working of £770 4s. 9d. The principal items of receipts are, omitting shillings and pence, as follow:—Rates, £175,269; rents, £41,406 (including £29,989 from reclaimed laud, £6556 street widening, £1805 market reserve); licenses £o428; building fees, £ldl4-; waterworks, | £16,745 (including £15,415. water by meter); baths, £816; Town . Hall, [£1404; libraries, £986; cemetery, | £2080; public, lavatories., £743; fees from reserves', £106; ' Basin Reserve, £282; Day's Bay, £489; Zoo, £911; golf and tickets,. £252; Fire. On the expenditure side the principal items- are: Street works, £41,752; scavenging and street watering, £11,569;-collection and destruction of refuse, £8201; Town Hall (including interest),-£6011; drainage, £7160; fire brigade, £10,268;' waterworks (working -£18,436, interest £22,300, sinking fund £3700), £44,436; street lighting, £6675 ;■ Basin Reserve, £930;. city reserves, £5985; Day's Bay, £2218; golf,' £511; Lyall Bay, £68; Kilbirnie Re, creation Ground, £226; Central Park, £1130; salaries, £6969; baths, £900; publics lavatories and bathing sheds, £2035; libraries, £4322; cemetery, £1639; i forestry, £2164; fish market purchases and refunds, etc., £2014; Hospital and Charitable. Aid Board instalments, £18,272; expenditure on Zoo, £2858; Technical School,. £300;; printing, advertising, and stationery, £1076; subsidy city bands, £200; accident claims; £361; street traffic control (Government), £500; miscellaneous, iu- t eluding polling offices expenses, legal, fuel and lighting, insurance,'and'sundry, £7986; interest on; loans, £43,605; sinking funds," £8458; Hutt Road maintenance, £3890; Lyall Bay, £570; milk inspection, £156. ■ ' : Under the heading of special expenditure there is,an excess over receipts of £5534 ss. 3d., but this is fully accounted for by war expenditure and special purchase's of laud for streetwidening 'and city improvement.
