A Press Association message from Christchurch states that the Rev. P. W. Fairclough, a well-known Methodist .Minister, died last night;' Ho went into a private hospital on Saturday to .undergo an operation. . The operation was said to he very successful, and Mi'. Faii-dough. promised to make a good recovery, but to-day he was seized with a heart attack, which resulted in death. ■ ; ' Major J. AV. Brunt, of the Wellington Infantry Battalion of the Main Body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, has been appointed ActingCamp Adjutant of Tauherenikau Camp. Surgeon-Major Archer Hosking, of Mastertou, will go into camp at Awapuni on May 1. He will probably accompany an early Reinforcement to the front. . / Mr. James Reid, one of the original members of the Auckland Stock Exchange, died yesterday, in his 80th. .year, says a Press telegram. The staff of the Education Board, during the course of a pleasant social evening spent at'{tie residence of Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Stewart, at Wadestown, took the opportunity to present Mr. J. Varnham, the retiring' chief clerk, with a substantial token of the; goodwill of his fellow-officers: Mr. Stewart, Mr. Fleming, and Mr. Bakewell, speaking on behalf of those present, commended Mr. Varnham on his twenty years' service, during the last twelve of which he had filled the position of chief clerk, wished him renewed vigour in his new undertaking, and trusted that by the return, of their eldest son, now doing good service at the front, Mr. and Mrs. Varnham and family might.be happily reunited in the near future in a mode of life which would suit them all. After musical honours had.been done him, Mr. Vamham made feeling and fitting reply.,;

A Press Association message. from 1 Sydney.records the.death of Mr. L. F.' Cocks, late of the} Wellington (head, office) staff of.the New Zealand Press Association. The late' Mr. Cocks, had been associated with the Press Association for the past 6J- years, haying joined the New Zealand branch three years ago. He resigned about a month ago for reasons of ill-health. Before ,ioining the Press Association staff -in Sydney in 1910, he had served for 12 years" tin the staff of the Australian "Star" (now the Sydney "Sun").
.Major C. 'H. S. Snow, who has recently received the Military Cross for distinguished services in the campaign in German East/ Africa, is a' New Zealander (writes the South African correspondent of ,'t-h.e G'hristclrurch "Press," under date of March I):.. The prospect of 'fighting attracted hinuto Soutli Africa at the outbreak of the Boer war in, 1899, and when he was XI years of age he worked his passage to Cape Town ;in the engine room of theWaiwera. Enlisting in the South African Light Horse as a trooper, the New Zoalauder saw two and a half years' service in'the field, chiefly under Colonel Bync, ir. General Buller's column on the Natal side. During' the" Boer war Ma v jor Snow was promoted to the rank of armourer-sergeant,.and he received two medals and -eight clasps—a generous..reward' -and- one well deserved. During the late Boer rebellion joined the Transvaal' Special Motor Service Corps as. lieutenant in charge of,the armoured motor-cars. Towards the' conclusion of the rebellion, Major Snow, like: the man in the parable of the talents, was given charge of : 20' armoured; motor corns, and he accompanied GeneralBotha to Windhuk, where he received his eaptaincv. In German East 'Africa, Major Snow was attached to Gen-, oral Beit's'column. Major Snow : has two brothers fighting—D'Oylv Rcis Snow, who was in Egypt and Gallipoli, and is now in France, and Lieutenant F. H. Snow, who entered .the Union Forces as a cadet on November 15, and is now in East Africa.
