HUTT AFFAIRS

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. The last ordinary meeting of the present Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evenine, the Mayor Mr. H. Baldwin, presiding, and there were also present: Councillors Hobbs, Ball, Clenden, Brassell, Carver, Meldrum and Hodgins. A letter was received from the district health officer pointing out that his recommendations in reference to a building in Riverbank Street had not "been carried out. The health officer asked that the council give the necessary month's notice, and the matter, if not attended to, is to be takeu to Court. ! It was docided to further request the Post Office to instal a Jd. stamp-vend-ing machine at Lower Hutt. On the suggestion of Councillor Clenden it was decided to again write to the/'Minister of Justice protesting auainst the proposed alterations to the old police station at Lower Hutt, the lJuilding being, in the consideration of the council, totally unsuitable for a police station. ' Letters from tho Hutt Association Football Club and the Hutt Rugby Football Club for grounds on the Hutt Recreation Ground for the coming football season were received. Permission to use grounds was granted in hoth. cases, and the parties are to ballot for the first pick of the grounds. The Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) was appointed as a delegate from the council to a conference to be held on April -19, which is to bo held at the request of the New Zealand Catholic Federation, regarding the censorship of films and the posters advertising films. The Borough Engineer (Mr. W. J. Roche) reported that during the year just closed building activity in the borough had been very active. During the year sixty-four permits had been granted, thirty of these permits had been for dwelling houses. The value of the buildings erected was £21,082 10s., an increase of nearly £10,000 011 last year. Fees for permits amounted to £41 10s. He also reported that Colin. Street was much overgrown with- gorse, but did not require attention ns there was. plenty of room for the very few vehicles using the road. Aglior.ty Street -was in need of repair.
