Counsel said tliafc accused had served in t.ho Boer War, and at the outbreak of the present war had twice enlisted, but been rejected on accpunt, of lung trouble. He. was finally accepted as assistant butcher on a transport,_ where he contracted corebro-spiral meningitis. The present offences were committed while accused was under the influence of drink.- Prosecuting counscl said tlio noliee described tlio accused a, plaiisiblo criminal. He was waiting to be tried oh charges of false pretences at Christchurch, Timaru, and Napier., The Judge said the offences were, mean and contemptible, and sentenced, accused to twelve months' imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be cumulative.
