The Union Company advise that owing to tho southern express being delayed, the Maori's departure from Lyttelton last evening was postponed until 10 p.m., and consequently it will be 9 o'clock this morning before the vessel will put in an appearance. Her -usual time of arrival hero is about 7 a.m. RECOVERING AN OLD WRKOK. • It seems as if there might be some good salvage for underwriters from the wreck of the steamer Bear, which lios near Cape Mendocino (says "Pairplay"). The after-part has been badly damaged, but from forward to aft of the enginoroom the vessel seems fairly sound, and an attempt to float this portion iB to be made. In addition to.this, somo valuable fittings have already been recovered, and success to the further operations will mean a handsomo recovery on tho vessel's insured value of £100,000. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. lir. W. J. Talmie, fourth officer- of the Monowai, has como ashore on holiday, and has been temporarily replaced by Mr. O. W. Dillner. Mr. F. E. Naylor, mate of the Waverley, lias come ashore, and Mr. G. W. Brown has signed on the vessel. Mr. T. W. Inkster has joined the Komata has third mate. Captain Braidwood is now in command of the Calm. Captain H. Wliite-Parsons, of the Napier Harbour Board, is, according to aHawke's Bay exchange, at present on his way to New Zealand. He has been away on active service with ono of His Majesty's ships for nearly two years. The Northern Steamship Company has increased the rates for passage fares and freights as from April 2. The only one exception is on freight to Te Aroha, ■which remains the same. The reason given for the incrense is the heavy additional expenditure for wages, coals, and stores. The Defender, after over two days' delay, left last evening for Picton and Hokitilca. She should get back here again early next week. The Hawera is duo this afternoon from Patea, but will not leave -until to-morrow on the return trip. Tho Calm was to have left Wanganui at midnight last night for Wellington, where she is duo during the morning. The vessel leaves hero this afternon for southern ports. The Ngatoro is due at Wanganui todav from Lyttelton, For Auckland direct the Karamu is to leave here to-day. The Union Company advise that tho Kamo will leave here to-day for LytWton •nd Dnnedin, taking cargo onlv. This wii?-"fco- received up till 4 p.m.
