DEBATING
.VICTORIA COLLEGE. At the eighteenth amijial. meeting of the Victoria "University College Debating Society, Mr. G. 0. Cooper presided, the chairman (Mr. G. G. AVatson) being absent through illness. The committee's report for the past year reviewed a most satisfactory season, and showed a distinct revival in the activities' of the society, v occasioned chiefly by the number of younger students able to take the places of their seniors at present on active service. In addition to the usual syllabus, several public debates were held,' including one on "Socialism" and another on "Impend Reconstruction," both of which had attracted' considerable public interest. The year also witnessed the revival of the Plunket Medal Contest, which had been discontinued! during the two previous sessions. The following officers were elected for the coming.year:—Patron, His Excellency the Governor; president, Prof. T. A. Hunter; vice-presidents, Mr. G. 0. Cooper (chairman) and Mr. R. A. 'Howie (vice-chairman); hon. secretary, Mr. J. A. Ross; hon. treasurer, Mr. E. Evans: committee, Misses Crawford and Neumann, and Messrs. Jenkins and Sheat; hon. auditor, Mr. J. G. Schmidt. . An attractive series of debates is being arranged for the year, and a syllabus will be published in due course. The number of young students now at college augurs well for the future of the society, and it is hoped that the interest displayed last year will continue during the absence of the older students who have so willingly responded to, the Empire's'call-
