PROTEST MEETING 'AT PETONE. ■" In view of the proposed curtailment ;• of the train service, in. the Hutt district, Mr. J. Wi M'Ewan, Mayor of • Petone, called a public meeting or protest, which, was; held in the Petone Council Chambers last evening.. The attendance, over which Mr. M'Ewan presided, was hot largo. It consisted: of an ex-Mayor, four councillors, an ex-councillor, and two. other citizens. 'An informal discussion,' in which Mr. iLondou took a.leading part, washeld. No fresh light was thrown- upon the subject, which was very fully venti- * lated by a deputation that recently waited upon the Minister, and received an exhaustive reply. One of the speakers, Mr. J. Bowles, appeared, not as a protester against the Government's action, but as a staunch supporter of it v Councillor Brocklebank said the Minister had asked whether the residents of the district could produce some cogent argument against the proposed curtailment of the servicj). The speaker had listened to what the' others had said, aud ho was inclined to admit that no such arguments had heen put . forward. N 0 resolution was carried, and the meeting broke up, after Bpenduig an hour in discussion.
