AUCKLAND MEETING
THE TOFF WINS THE ST, LEGER. TOA TBRE'S BIG HANDICAP. By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. Auckland, April 9. i-The second day of the Auckland Racing Club's autumn meeting was held in perfect weather before a large attendance. His Excellency the Governor and the Countess of Liverpool were present. The totalisator figures for the' day were ,£57,646, an increase of ',£BB4 over the''figure* for the corresponding day last year. The "total for the meeting was .£104,089, an increase of ,£9806 over last year's total. . v ... Seadown, who ran fourth-in the Easter Handicap (which was. won by a stable mate, Menelaus) was made favourite in the Stewards' Handicap, Llanishen coming next in public favour. • Seadown was in the front division the whole way, and came away from his companions in the straight, winning comfortably by two lengths. . ~, Judging by the totalisator the Victoria Handicap' was destined to be a race between the three top weights, Simonides, Lingerie, and Ample, and this proved to be N the case. Lingerie 6hot out at the start, but Ample was never far away.' Simonides came with-a'great'dash at the entrance to the straight. : He soon disposed of Ample, and then got on'terms with Lingerie; • winning comfortably. The Toff went out a very pronounced favourite in the St. Leger Stakes,, and he won decisively, though Bjorneborg hung to him from' start to finish. At the entrance to the straight the riders of both- horses shook up their mounts, but ! The Toff answered the call more land won comfortably, though Bjorneborg. ; looked rather dangerous 1 three furlongs from home, and Rekanui led on sufferance I for nine furlongs, but was, never really | in the race. • The St. George's Handicap resolved itself into a keen struggle between Buntvoh. Rebel, Bedford, and Toa Tere. Rebe! dropped out'of the bunch a.furlong from home, where Bunting came with a. ! great dash, and had to be content with I third place. Toa Tere beat Bedford bv half a length. ' . 'The. Steeplechase was an interesting event.. At least five of the six competitors •seemed to have a good chance; until about five furlongs -from home, when Bonny' Jean separated herself from the field, and, guinsr verv confidently, it soon became evident that she had only to keep her feet to win. Troublesome (the favourite) jumped disappointingly, -but nearly succeeded'in wresting second place from Plymouth. In the IT'iift Handicap, 3lill o' Gowrie repeated her Saturday's performance, winning from start to finish,, though ,she had difficulty in stalling off-a -challenge from Form Uij ami ■< Koesian in the straight.- Uvcir.as, ''-'bo was well fancided, got av.ny badly, and never, managed to get out of U:e ruuk.. 1 DETAILED RESULTS.
