c THE CURTAILED TRAIN SERVICE. ' Tlie fortnightly meeting of the Onslow Borough Council was held on Thursday evening, the Mayor (Air. C. C. Crump) presiding. There jvere also present: Councillors J. G. Smith, W. Appleton, A. C. Budd, J. M. Dale, 0. Bowden, and A. W. 0. Palmer. The District Health Officer wrote calling the attention of the council to the unsatisfactory condition of the banks of the ICaiwarra stream. It was decided to refer the matter to the Borough Engineer to deal with. The District Health Officer in his letter stated that the inspector found a large putrifying dead dog on the foreshore, and three putrifying dead animals in sacks in a stagnant pool under the north portion of Kaiwarra bridge. The inspector also reported that there were several cart loads of rubbish on the banks, which, although not very offensive to the senso of smell, was very unsightly, and should not be allowed to remain.
In connection with the curtailed railway service, it was stated that a motorbus owner was prepared to run two buses to connect Onslow Borough with the city. Councillors were delighted with the suggestion, and it was decided to give the project every encouragement and assistance.
Councillor J. G. Smith, in the absence of Councillor Brenton-Rule, moved, in accordance with notice of motion:
(1) That in view of the projected withdrawal of many passenger trains announced by the of Railways, this council take immediate steps in conjunction with other local bodies and members of Parliament interested, to protest against the unwarrantable and unnecessary hardships to be imposed on both civilians and soldiers.
(2) That the Mayor be requested to convene a publio meeting within the borough as early as possible, in order that residents may have an opportunity of discussing the proposed curtailment of train' services.
In the discussion which followed, it was suggested that perhaps it would ba possible to run the petrol car between Johnsonville and the city. Councillors generally thought it would be better to defer action until the proposed now time-tahle was available, and the mover asked leave to withdraw the motion, and the request was agreed to.
On the motion of Councillor J. G. Smith, it was resolved thai the Railway Committee of the_ council consider the matter of arranging a motor-bus service suitable to the needs of the borouch should the evening train he cancelled.
