Letter from Cairo. Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co., of Wellington, have received the following generous acknowledgment of gifts sent to the (New Zealand) Aotea Convalescent Homo at Hcliopolis, near Cairo:—"l have to thank you for the generous gilts of cocoa tablets, soup packets, ucid drops, etc., donated by you to this home. • These useful gifts have come along at just tho very best time possible. Perhaps you would like to hear how we are using some of them. As you may have heard, wo have largo numbers of visiting soldiers at-Aotea, who are not parents, but just;-some of the boys who have been given leave from the brigade for a few days to visit Cairo. At Aotea wo have a fairly good Up-to-date house, and are ablo to p ook and make proper dishes in-the ordinary way, hence it is rather' a' waste, to use the bountifully handy littlo packets of cocoa and soup. At the brigade the men all cook for themselves in little parties of four, with a limited amount of fuel, etc., and it is a great boon to them to have these handy little 'oxtras'_ to make up quickly. , A hot, nourishing drink_ .is most acceptable when thoy aro just moving out of oanip or returniug after a long ■ weary day. As the various littlo parties of men on leave go back from Cairo wo give them a packet of cocoa and soup to tako with thein, and very useful they have found these gifts. . I have also, written to. your London office ro the safo arrival of gifts. Tho acid drops are also being very much appreciated. With many thanks,—l am yours faithfully (Sgd.) M. A. Women for Hop-picking. It is noted in the report .of ...the Women's Employment Branch of the Labor Department that a great many people called in reference to hop-pick-ing, but only eighty registered ■, their names as willing to go. When it camo to tho point only forty-six actually went. . The report Btates: ■ "It would save much, time and inconvenience if people, before registering, would fully make tip their, minds as to whether they intended to go., .The. same statement applies to hop-growers who change their .minds at the last moment. I find it muob. more satisfactory to deal through the Nelson Department of Labour than direct with the growers. In the latter case a telegram would be received from_ a grower that he required twenty pickers, without particulars being given as to the looation of tho hopfiold, accommodation, pay, or anything else. When the departure of the pickers wasbeing arranged for another telegram would be received asking that no pickers, be sent. In dealing.through the Department all information- was given, so that there were no disappointments and no ono was stranded."-- •' Shannon Notes. The local Patriotic. Society's monthly meeting has been postponed until Monday, April 16, on account of their usual night falling on Easter Monday this mouth.. , One branch of the society has been formed into a sewing guild for Red- Cross work; president, i\lrs. A. C. Hyde; secretary, Mrs. Barber; treasurer, Mrs, Pickett. Contributions have como forward freely, and tho branch is now itf full working 'order. - They meet evory Tuesday afternoon in the Bank of New Zealand, buildings, in a room kindly lent by Mr. Pickett. On Friday night last a concert, organised by. Mrs. Gibson and Miss Laurvig, in aid of the local Red Cross work, proved a great success, the takings being £15 Is. 6d.. The local orchestra, now consisting of seven instruments, ; contributed two • selections. A humorous chorus, and, later on, a humorous trip were both well rendered. Mr. and Mrs. Bishop—newcomers, and a very welcome addition—gave a splendid rendering of that graiid vocal duet, "Watohmani What of the Night?" and they also rendered solos for which they were-deservedly encored.- '•' Mrs. Bishop nnd Miss Laiirvig's- voices blended to advantage- in:.'-the. 'duet," "Ora'Pro Nobis."-Mrs. Gibson'sang "May Morning" and "Let Us Have Peace.". The Rev Mr. Rowe, of Forton, recited "Comrade Jim," -and later sang "Keep on Hopin'," for which he gained .ah encore. , Miss. Laurvig received an encore for her solo,-"A Little Bit; of Heaven." Two items, a cornet solo, Mendelssohn's "Spring Song," by. Mr. Graham, and,a violin duet,. "Andantino" and "Danse Rc-yalej" by Messrs. H. Graham and Reg. Norwood, were very much enjoyed by the audience. Mr. Powell sang' a : very pretty song, entitled "God Will Send You Back/' Wee Miss Marie M'Pherson was very dainty in a little fairy dance, which she had -to repeat. A. short chorus, "Good Night," brought proceedings to a close. The accompaniments Were ably played by Mrs. Nicholson and Miss Laurvig. The expenses being only 365., the substantial sum of £13 ss. 6d. was handed' over to the "cause.". ■

Several local soldiers are home just now on final leave, and their friends are arranging a "send-off" for on Tuesday next. j . ■- The Bev. Mf. Talme'r, secretary, of the Patriotic Society, after an : absence of • six months,' is returning to Shannon on Saturday. He and his bride will be the guests of honour .. at. . a euchre; party and social off-April 12. Archdeacon Cummins has ~ filled Mr. Palmer's place as' secretary ■in a-very satisfactory manner. ■ ' At the recent sacred 1 concert the collection amounted to £5 2s. The hire of hall was £1, leaving £i 25., which Mr. Moynihan is handing over to the Patriotic Society.

A woman's face puzzles a woman herself. "Who's advice is she to take? She hears this: "Mrs. .Blank has ■ a complexion like a peach, and she says she owes it to bathing her face In lemon juice every night and sleeping on a violet pillow." Then she is toldi "Doctor So-and-so says sleep with the windows open, take more exercise and cold baths, and he's got ■' a skin like a nutmeg grater and a nose like a beet." It is easy to guess neither advice will bo followed. Miss Milsom knows what advice to give because she alone has had the experience. The two groat Cultone remedies—the Skin Pood (Ss.) for night and -Balm (3s. 6d.) for daily use—are highly recommended, besides other vory. necessary and delightful accessories too numerous, to mention.-All'hair work, hair creams, tonics, and lotions. Call or write. All . 'questions . replied; to promptly and confidentially: Miss Milsom, Barnett's Buildings, M .Willis St. 'Phone SU.-AdTt.
