GOLF
THE MUNICIPAL CLUB. "" In spite of the boisterous weather on Saturday, tho opening of * the Municipal Golf Club was well attended. Many friends of tho municipal. golf soheme, visitors from other clubs, and a number of. returned soldiers, attended and were heartily welcomed by the officers, of tho club. Dr. Cameron, the president of .'the club, addressed the gathering. He pointed out that the position of the links, which had, until recently, been a wilderness, but now this was one part of the Town Belt that was kepi m proper order, free from gorse and for the purpose for which it was dedicated to the city, viz.. reorcation, it was clearly a credit to the city. He pointed out that hy their rules the club were pledged to give the council their support in. matins the golf soheme a success, also that the club officials had nothing whatever to do with the question of Sunday golf. That matter was entirely in tho hands of ths Sunday Golf Committee, a soparats body, which, howeverr certainly roceiveid the , support of practically all olub members. The Municipal Club necessarily had members of moat Church denominations, and he and the committee would not allow debatable religious matters to, destroy, the harmony and good feeling that prevailed in their olub. . Personally he supported the principle of allowing liberty and full freedom to everyone in all purely religious matters'; it was right and proper for the members of the clttb 1 to have religious viowSj and, as ir. tho past, he and h'is committee would present their views. being unnecessarily interfered with. Certainly all of there, including himself, took a keen interest in the Sunday golf question, but the case was now sub judico, and he only desired to outline tho principles and policy the olub had adopted in the matter. The Municipal Club welcomed all good sportsmen and golfers whether they played on Sunday or r.ot. He stated that by bad management and want of proper organisation, etc., the Sydney City Council had temporarily j wrecked their, golf scheme, bnt it had been resurreoted by prominent sportsmen largely on behalf of tho returned soldiers suffering from nerve shook, strain, etc., and the links' were open for them even on Sundays, and proving a valuable assot in. restoring thorn to good health. Tho club ana tho custodian of the. Wellington Municipal Links flUvnvs cordially welcomed soldiers. Golfers were proud of the gallant deeds of sportsmen belonging to all branches of sport. Regarding plr.ying golf during war time, his advice was for them to plav, keep tbomselvos in good health, and get fit, and bo ready when their time came to do thoir bit. and he was sure that al! sportsmen and golfers wero proparcd to do this. He wished golfors a pleasant afternoon on tho links. Mr. R. Fletcher, M.P., and Mr. D. M'Laren also' addressed tho gathering. They Teferred to the work Dr. Cameron had dono when tho golf scheme was in embryo, saying that ho had shown his Scotch tenacity of purpose .when he was pushing to get the scheme of municipal golf adopted by the City Counoil._ i Councillor Frost, chairman of the
