THE GO-SLOW' POLICY AT THE MINES

'.lILITARY APPEAL BOARD'S WARNIN G ' i---A FINAL HINT By.: Telegraph.—Press Association. - Westport,. March 31. At a sitting of the Military Appeal Board to-day, after hearing evidence concerning tho reduction in the output of the miues, the chairman, Mr. J. (3. Evans, S.M., said that with regard to the exemption of miners, evidence showed that a "go-slow" policy was not in vogue at the Millerton mine, but was in vogue at Denniston and We'stporl>Stocktoii.' The' board, had already indicated, its policy, ana ; as the mine manager at Millerton had given an assurance that the "go-slow" policy did not obtain at Millerton, the appeals would bo adjourned sine die, as before, but on the express stipulation that the appeals would be reviewed.if a "go. slow policy were adopted or men unreasonably and 'unnecessarily absent from!, work. With-re-ward to Denniston,' the board wished to give tho miners concerned every op-, portunity of. reconsidering tho position, and , also to give more consideration to'each man's case than could be given hurriedly. ■ ■■ , While the board was sitting the appeals from the Denniston and West-port-Stockton mines Would be further adjourned to enable the board to carefully check each man's case, and the miners- would have a further opportunity of defending or justifying their po^tions v if 1 such were possible. The board wished to repeat its warning that it intended to carry out its policy and refuse exemption unlesß the output were kept up to normal. This the chairman added would bo a serious matter. both for the country and the men, who would irrevocably become soldiers. It was dear that the "goslow" policy was in- vogue in" these mines, but the extent and effect thereof was contained in detail in statements and returns of time,' wages, and output submitted by" the managers. The board had not had the opportunity of going carefully into this detail, and noticing the result.
