RE-CAPTURE OF A CONVICT
THE TERRACE GAOL'ESCAPEE j CARRYING GUN AND REVOLVER John Doviic, the prisoner who escaped from the -Terrace <Gaol on tho morning of March 17, was recaptured yesterday. Ho fell into tho hands of Constable Grcgan on: the beach at Levin, and .. after a rather sensational arrest was ■ . brought to the city and lodged once . . more behinii prison walls last night. ... Constablßifiregan was walking with liia wifo on tho Levin. beaclTyesterday ■ morning, when he saw a ,man who> answered to tho description of the escaped prisonor. ; The man was carrying a gun, • and his manner appears to .have con. '- firmed the constable's suspicions. Grcgan managed to get close to the man- ' without'alarmihg him,,and then threw him to the ground; suddenly and . slipped on the handcuffs. ■ A search, showed, that Dome was carrying a revolver of the army pattern as well as the gun v His clothes and . other articles in his possession indtcatod that ho bad raided someone's - property during his period of liberty. ' - It will bo remembered that Dorne got away from the Terrqco gaol early on a Saturday, morning. He was serving a sentence of several years' imprisonment for. The man- appearsto have made his way across tne hills., behind Brooklyn and Island Bay, and to have secured civilian clothes at an early stage of his journey. It is suspeoted that he paid a visit to Paraparaumu soon after his oscape.
