MO,\ T OWAI'6 MOVEMENTS. The Union Comiiany advise that the Mouowai, which left here for Napier. .Qisborne, and Auckland last evening, is due at At? It I and on Tuesday. She will leave Auckland the same day, and Gisborne on Wednesday, and is due at Ha pier early on Thursday, o-jrinc to the holiday' arrangements at these northern ports being upset through the accident to the Arahura the Monowai will tun round at Napier, and leave there on Thursdaj niorning for Gisborne. She will leave here at noon the same day for Dunedin direct. ' 3 - • TUTANEKAI BETUTtKB. • . After, another fortnight's vain searching for tho missing end of the cable in took Strait, the Government cable steamer mtanekai arrived in port yesterday afternoon, and berthed at No. 3 Clyde • Quay Wharf. The cable, which has been sown for over forty years, is apparently buried too dean for the grapple to catch it. It will be remembered tjiat the caMs was picked up ouce, but broke while being hauled up. One end was seemed ■ and buoyed, hut the Ttitanekai has ~.d no Irak in loeatir.g the cable again. The • weather has been bad on this trip. Strong _ and variable winds, but mostlv from .tho east, were experienced even in Port _ Underwood ,md Cloudy Bay, and these haiunerM operations a good de.nl. Ek vessel has now come in for 'instructfolis. • It will probably' be decided this iiornniff what 11 to he done in connoc.'ion with ' the lost cable. FAILURE TO TAKE SOUNDINGS. , ; Several cases have, occuned recently in which British merchant vessels stranded, , vid the Courts of Inquiry found that the stranding \ms due to failure to take ■ soundings, says "Shippini? World." In *** j c j ase the mnß 'er's certificate was sue- . pended. Soundings should be taker | whenever there is any doubt as to a vcs. .eels position on approaching land. II ,is vitally .important at the present time that this precaution should be taker when a Tessel is approaching a const on which, owing to war condition?, lights arc extinguished or altered. In the event of ft. casualty to-a vessel which .could be attributed to the omission by a master or .j'ther certijeared officer to take soundings, *J ac k T -">nld 'he brought to the notice of the Court of Inquiry. THE ANTIOPE. _ The barque Antiope is at present loading scrap-iron and timber at Port Chalmers. At first sight it may appear rather strange that after bringing a cargo of iron to this port tho -Antiope shoulii sail with a. freight of a similar nature. The explanation lies. in the fact that tho ..vessel is taking away a cargo of steel ' scraps," which oannot be treated - here, says the "Otago Daily Times." She is loading about' 1000 tons of these, ond also 100,000 ft. of timber, which is being railed through from Southland. The Antiope's spars and rigging are now all in position, giving her a very fine apneap. ance, and some sails, which are beingsont over from Sydney, will, arrive here before she is ready for sea. . ~. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. My. p. W. Elliot has joined the Maori as third enginee. Mr. J. 0. Bowling has joined the Corinna as lirst mate, replacing Mr. O. C. bullock, who has come ashore. The coastal steamer Breeze was to hove left Dunedin yesterday with general cargo for Timaru, Picton. and Wanganui. She does not call at Wellington. , Timber unloading operations have been .completed by the schooner Huanui at Dunedin, and she is now loading a eeherl cargo at the southern port for Kai- ; para. The Waipori, which has been delayed in the discharge of her produce cargo at tho Bluff owing to shortage of labour was 1 to have left the southern port on Thursday Jor Napier, Gishorne, and Auckland. It is expected that the Woottdn will leave Lyttelton to-day, and she is due here early to-morrow morningThe John, which is due to-day from Gisbornc, is to leave to-day for Wanganui. She is due back here on Tuesday after which, her movements ai;e indefinite. The Magic, which left on Thursday for Sandy Bay, to load stone for Wellington, is, due back again' about Tuesday next, and will probably leave'aenin on Friday next for Sandy Bay to load for Wellington. ' It is estimated that it will be at least the end nf next week before . the hulk Jubilee- will be able to leave for Auckland. In tho meanwhile the Canopus is running Ivv usual trips between,. Westport and Lyttelton. Messrs. Dalgety and 00. advise that the Orepuki is now expected here from Lyttelton to-morrow instead of to-day. and that she will.sail on Monday for Nelson and Nydia Bay. The next Anchor Company vessel for Nelson and the' West Ooast will be the Waimen.. which is due here on Tuesday .from Wanganui. ' She leaves tho same day for, the south.
