MILITARY APPEALS

-« FURTHER CASES IN WELLINGTON. Some additional appeals were considered by the third Wellington Military Service Board yesterday morning. Th© board consisted of Mr. W. H. S. Moorhouse (chairman), Mr. A. O'L. Considine, and Mr. M. J. Mack. Captain Baldwin was the military representative. « Taraua Eruera Sutherland, settler, Castlecliff, Wanganui, appealed.on the ground that he was not a reservist. He was a half-caste Maori, and had been a member of the first Maori draft, but had received his discharge. Mr. G. Hutchison," who represented appellant, said that Sutherland was anxious to volunteer Jigain, but had very important interests in the distribution of his late father's estate. Captain Baldwin said he was satis-' fied the facts' had been stated correctly. Sutherland,' >as a member of the Native race, did' not come within the reserve. Appellant's father had fought on the pakeha side in the Maori Wars. . The board allowed. the appeal. Temporary exemption was granted the following ships' firemen, on the application of Mr. W. T. Young, secretary .of the Seamen's and Firemen's Union:—Edward Ernest Colclough, John William M'Laehlan, Peter Crosby; Basil Brown, and Charles Lyons (Wellington), Alexander Taylor (Nelson),' John Miller (Lytfcelton), and Robert- Murphy (Auckland). Temporary exemption was also granted James Kelly,, seaman (Wellington). Exemption in all cases was conditional on the men remaining in their present employment. The appeal of William Alfred Farrow, fireman (Lyttelton) was dismissed, Mr. Young stating that he was unable to satisfy "the board as to,/the present whereabouts of the man. '■ 'Denis James Casey, plumber (Wellington), was granted one month's leave in order that ho might attend to contracts at present in hand. ■ Sydney Olark-, labourer (Belmont) < proved that he was over age, and his appeal was allowed. The appeal of H. W. Serrar, whose case came up for rohearing,_ was adjourned sine die, to bo reviewed before the First 'Division is exhausted. Tho board will sit again at 2.30 on Tuesday. .
