Letters received from France by a recent mail give details of the exploit which won for Pte. J. Fitzgerald, of Wellington, the Military Medal. Pte. Capt.-.Tardine, writing to Mrs. Fitzgerald, says that her son was hilled on October 1, during the advance on the Sommo at Eaucourt VAbnaye. He was sent out beyond the position the com--pany had been ordered to take with a message to bring in a number of men who had gone bevond, and were lying in shell-holes and in danger from tho artillery barrage. He delivered his message, and many,men of .the company owp their, lives to his bravery. He was last seen making his way along the line in an endeavour to find more men.: The firing at this time was very heavy; and: Pte. Fitzgerald did not return. A Court of Inquire reported him n'q missing, believed to lie (lend. Pte. -Fitzgerald was recommended for his bravpry, and the Military Medal, was awarded.
