BELGIAN GRATITUDE
' FOR A PALMERSTON NORTH EFFORT. Towards the end of last year Mrs. G. M. Snelson, and some l'almefston North ladies, made an effort to raise a stock of goods (mostly clothes), which' they deemed would be needed by Belgians in distress during the winter months. Tho effort was crowned with success, the result being that cases containing no fewer than 2800 articles were forwarded to the Belgian authorities best able to distribute them where they would be of the greatest service to the people they were intended for. Iu acknowledging the gifts, the Belgian Ministcre de l'lnterieur wrote'as follows: —"Dear Madam,--Many thanks for all the things (jackets, costumes, boots, stockings, ejic.) you have been so good to send me for the little Belgian children- and their parents. They needed them, and you cannot imagine their happiness in getting these, things. They are very grateful to you, and tender their best thanks. ' Perhaps should you like to have some photographs of the little Belgian children, herewith I have the pleasure to hand you some pictures and hope you will enjoy to see 'les enfants de l'Yser.' About 5000 of them are sheltered in 52 Belgian colonies. They came from the Belgian front (towns and villages near the firing line). Many of these children are ill, nervous, but after a short time in the colonies their health improving, and the peace of the country and the good care make thein happy, whilst their fathers are fighting for our liberty. I also thank you for 'les enfants l'Yser,' and pray God to bless you, your country, and your family.—Yours very truly, Juliet l'Carton de.Wait. "P.S.— Many of the boxes were for a 1 long time delayed, but all came in ■ safely, and are now unpacked aud given where the needs are. I am sending ' you these cards in order you might ; see our children. When I came myself out of a German prison :P was de- > lighted to find here all those presents, ; and to be in charge of distributing ; them—J.C.W." "
