The list, of aliens to whom certificates ot naturalisation were granted by the British Home Secretary during De* comber, 1916, comprised 61 oasesi made up as follows:—Three Airiericans, two Austrians, three Dutch, two French,' 23 Germana, one Hungarian, two * Norwegians, three Rumanians, 18 sians, and four of other nationalities: .All the Austrians, Germans, and Hungarians are British-bom widows. : Detective-Inspector William Hester,-. one of the senior members of the Criminal Investigation Department, Scot* land Yard, has just retired after nearly 30 years' service. He was attached to the Special Branch, which is 'concerned mostly with secret societies, anarchists, and spies, and had spent: practically tho wholo of his official life in this phase of dctectivo work. He several times accompanied King Edr ward on liis visits to Berlin, and has received many presents from members of the Royal'Faniilics.
