THE " HALAKITE" INQUIRY
AN EDITOR'GROSSLY MISLED.
London, March 28. At tho halakite inquiry, in view of the Attorney-General's ■' disclosures and Lord Moulton's ovidence, Sir Theodore Cook (editor of "The Field") withdrew his charges. He said he had grosslv misled regarding halakite.— Aus.-N.Z/Cable Assn.
[Sir. Theodore Cook is chairman of tho White Power syndicate, which lie formed for the purpose of manufacturing a new oxplosiyo named "halakite." ( A very ourious story concerning the explosive was related by him in a letter to the London "Times" to explain why the office of "The Field" was visit-. Ed by police officials, who were seeking documents belonging to the syndicate. He explained that halakite was a powerful, new explosive which bad been invented by a neutral, and that desiring to secure it for Britain and her AlKes he had bought out the neutral and set up a syndic-ate to manufacture it. Tho French authorities had tested it, and foundit excellent; but the British au- | thorities declared that it was not required, and placed extraordinary difficulties' in the way of the business. Sir Theodoro's charges alleged interference with the movements of the principals in the businoss, and appear to have led to the inquiry which is now being reported. A message received yesterday stated that Lord Moulton, Director-General of Explosives Supplies in _ the Ministry of Munitions, stated in evidence that analysis disolosed the presence in "halakite" of 22 per cent, of nitro-glyoerine. He considered that a delibonvto imposture was being practised.]
