TRENCH MORTAR PRACTICE

_ ,Tlie trench mortars, which arrived in. the Dominion some weeks ago, are to be used in practice with live bombs at Featherston Camp • to-day. Four varieties of mortars are to be used. Of these the 3.7 in. fires jam-tin bombs, the 4in. fires a high explosive shell, while the Vickers 1.675 in. and 2in. throw bombs with steel tails attached, ignition being by means of a friotion tube. The mortars have a range up" to 500. yards and the bomhs fired weieh up to '601bs. '
