SEDITION CHARGES

TEE DEFENDANTS' APPEALS .TO BE HEARD TQ-DAY At the opening of the Appeal Court sessions yesterday, tho appeals of a number of men convicted in the Magistrate's Court of sedition were fixed for hoaring in the. Supremo Court to-day. The appellants aro; Thomas Brindla, Peter Fraser, Frederick R. Cooko, James Thorn, and Robort Semplß. Following is a.synopsis of the charges preferred against .the appellants iii Hie Lower Court:—

Brindlo and Fraser, publishing an utterance which was seditious in that it had a tendency to excite disaffection against tho Govornmeait of Now Zealand; and to interfere with the recruiting of His Majesty's Forces and with the offeotive conduct of the military of His Majesty; and K discourago tho prosecution of tho present war to a victorious conclusion; and to encourage opposition to tho enforcement and administration of the laws in force in New Zealand relative to compulsory military service during that war; and to exoite disloyalty in respect of: that war.

Cooke, publishing an utteranco which was seditious in that it had a tendency to interfere with the recruiting of His Majesty's Forces and with tho effective conduct of the military preparations of His Majesty ; and to discourage.the prosecution of the war to a victorious conclusion; and to interfere with the proper and effective enforcement or administration of the laws in force in New Zealand-relative to compulsory military service, during tho war; aJid to encourage lawlessness and to oxcito disloyalty in rospeot of the war.

Thorn,'publishing an utteranco which was seditious in that it had a tendency to excite disaffection against tho Government of tho United Kingdom and the Government of New Zealand; and to interfere with the rccrulting of His' Majesty's Forces and with tho effective conduct of the military preparations of His Majesty; and to- discourago the prosecution of the war to a victorious conclusion; and to oncourago opposition to the enforcement of administration of tho laws in force for tho time being ,in New Zealand relative to compulsory, military sorvico during the prosent war; and to excite disloyalty in respect of tho war._ Semple, publishing an utteranco which had a seditious tondeaicy, in that it had a tendency to interfere .with the recruiting of His Majesty's Forces in New Zealand ; expressing a seditious .intention, by tho utterance of certain words (two informations). The appellants will be represented by Mr. Georgo Hutchinson./
