WIN FOR THE GOVERN- "* . MENT , ( BIG MAJORITY ' (Eec. March 25,/ 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, March 25. The leather was fine for the elections, the voting was heavy, and everything passed off quietly. Up to midnight, when the counting ceased, none of the returns were completed, but the majority had been sufficiently far advanced to show that tho Nationalists \havo secured a solid victory on the incomplete figures, which are capable, however, of considerable alteration. Tho state of parties appears to be approximaetly as follows: — Nationalists ■. 52 P.L.L ; 27 Independent .'. 3 Doubtful 8 The outstanding features "were the 'defeats of the Hon: J. Meaghor, Lord Mayor, and Speaker of the Assembly, for tho Phillip electorate, where he stood as an Independent Labour candidate ' against Doyle, tho president of the P.L.L. j James M'Gowan, an old Labour leader and former Premier, by Nikellj and Arthur Griffith, one time Minister of Worts, by O'Brien, at Annandale, both victories being P.L.L. , AU the Ministers appear safe, though one or two are not altogether out of the wood.
