BALLOT APPEALS
YESTERDAY'S PROCEEDINGS
The third Military Service Board resumed its "sitting. yesterday. • Mr. W. H. S. Moorhouse- presided, and with, him were Messrs. M. J. Mack and A. O. Considine. ■ Captain P.. Baldwin, was Dre-sent-as military representative. The Wellington i'ire "Underwriters' Association appealed "on'behalf of Fred Hilton. Danks, secretary of the association, and also secretary of the Marine Underwriters and Accident Underwriters Association. .Mr. T. Neave appeared in support ;of the appeal. It was stated that the previous holder of the office, Mr. Leslie Gibbons, had gone to the front with "the 18th Reinforcements, and on his departure Danks, who was the assistant, was appointed acting secretary of the three associations. It was desired to secure for the appellant six 'weeks' leave of absence, so that ho may instruct his suocessor in the duties, and also that he might attend the annual conferences due to be hold next; month. The chairman of the Wellington Underwriters' Association gave evidence, and the board allowed the appeal. > _ Robert Kennedy, barrister and solicitor, whose appeal for extension of time was set down for hearing, sent in a letter withdrawing the samo. In his no to to the board Mr. Kennedy said: "My appeal was lodged solely to ask the board for the necessary time to adjust trust matters and wind up my part of the business. Thig I see, and saw, no way of doing before May 1, s\pd I intended to ask the board for time till that date. I have In. the meantime been selected as a non-commissioned officer on probation for the draft going into camp on May 2, 1917, and as I do not intend to ask for time boyond that date, this appeal becomes unnecessary. I accordingly withdraw my appeal." _ The appeal of James Francis M'Enirney, telegraphist, was adjourned for three months on the ground of undue hardship. Appellant stated that two of his brothers had gone to the front and ho was the only one left. His mother was a widow and there were four sisters, one of whom was still at echool. Martin Sund. wharf labourer, 19 Alpha Street, Wellington, appealed that being a foreigner (a Swede) he was not a Reservist. A certificate was ' received from the Swedish Consul stating that Sund had registered under a misapprehension. The appeal was upheld. The appeal of Richard Smytlio GUI'- mour was adjourned for two months, the ground of appeal being family affairs. . .
There were three annellants for financial assistance and the board will submit' Its recommendations to the Minister.
The appeals of the following Reservists were dismissed on .account of the nonappearance of appellants:—A. Harrison, compositor, Main Road, Lower Hutt; Arthur John Finch, 'blacksmith, 18 Ray' Street. Newtown; T. Ambler, railway workshops,- Petone. and William Henry Cavendish Armstrong, steward, Union Ste-im Ship Co.
The apnea!, of Alexander'Lawson was ndionmed to May 2. and that of Martin John Befhune. shearer and A. and P: worker, Masterton. was adiourned sine die. provided annellant continues in hi* present occupation.
The board will sit again at 10 o'clock this morning.
