PERJURY TRIAL AT HAMILTON
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hamilton, March 22.
At the Supreme Court to-dav tha trial was continued of Tahu Hirawario, charged with perjury. Mr. Selwyn Mays appeared for the Crown, and Mr. J. Lundon for the prisoner. The evidence was practically tha same as at the Rua trial, -Constable Skinner described how Pukepuke pointed a gun at him. There was no similarity in the appearance of Puke-' puke and Tuhoa. Accused (Tahu) had sworn. "at the Pukepuke trial that ■ when Pukepuke picked up the gun he (Skinner) had gone up the' Gisborna track.' Corroborative evidence of Constable Skinner's statement was' given, by Constables Maisey, .Gatward,' Shearman, and the Government Ranger (Cobbledick). . Considerable argument again ensued on the question of revelaticy, Mr. Maya protesting against the line of questions put by Mr. Lundon. His Honour upheld the protests by, Mr. Mays. ' ■. , , , , Mr. Lundon said he had never attempted to prove that Constable Skinner was not there.' In fact, they had always maintained not only Skinner was there but that he was the principal and central figure in the whole business. . ■ .. His Honour: But your man (accused) says Skinner was not there when Pukepuke picked up the gun. Mr. Lundon alleged that the police made a mistake in the identity- of Pukepuke and Tuhoa. ; His Honour declines to permit the present .lines of cross-examination to proceed'as the ca'se would take a fortnight to finish. At the conclusion of the evidonca counsel addressed the jury. Mr. , Lundon's address lasted some two hours. His Honour will sum up. this morning. ■ '
