Mr. Walter Knowles, a well-known figure in "Wellington, died at his residence in Adelaide Hoad shortly before 10 o'clock yesterday morning, aged 76" years. The deceased, who was born in the Qld Country, arrived in Wellington with his parents when he was a boy, and iyaa" 'educated here. As a young man fie entered the service of the National Bank, and remained in it for a number of years, rising' to the position of manager at Napier. Subsequently he and Mr. Hervey, who had also been on the staff of the National Bank, carried on business in Wellington as sharebrokers and ' land and estate, agents. on Mr.'Knowles received an appointment on tiie staff of the Stamp Department, and remained a Civil Servant until three or four years ago. Tor some time he had been in failing- health, and for. about a fortnight before liis death he had been oonfined to his bed. He leaves a. widow and a son, an engineer at present on the staff of the hospital ship Maheno. The interment, which will take place to-morrow, will he private.
The death is reported, at Mereweather, Newcastle, 'N.0.W., of Mr. Percy Dix, tneatrical _manager. For some years past Mr.' Dix had conducted a permanent vaudeville snow: at Mereweather. Mr. Dix was a resident of Wellington for some .rears, when he held a lease of the defunct i Theatre Royal. He inaugurated a circuit in New Zealand, and actually competed against the firm of John Fuller and Sons, the result being the attainment of a high standard of performance. Mr. Dix, who was about fifty years of age, was a genial and popular man, who had ; many friends in thie country. Mr. J. H. Pagni, Consular-Agerit for Ita.lv at Auckland, is on a visit to ■Wellington. At the annual meeting of the Wellington Football Club last evening, Mr. John Thompson was the-recipient of a presentation from the club, as a mark of appreciation of his services while secretary. ;
