Weans Department, appealed on .behalf of Thomas Brindle, James Vu> cent,, and Charles H. Taylor (H.M. Prison,- Wellington) r Edward . James ; |\\ elsh. and Herbert Hodgson (Waikeria ! Prison- .Te Awamutu); John James (Ross (H.M. Prison; Koto Nira.Wai"marmo); Harold Andrews (Kihikiki); and Alexander AVright (Im-ercargill), all serving- sentences. The appeals were allowed, as the appellants: wore not reservists, according to Section 3, paragraph c, of the Regulations.

The appeals- of Harry Cox, slaughter'ynan, Feilding, George Duncan Smart,' Oamani, and Thomas Johnston Gisj borne, were supported by Mr. M. j. Reardon, secretary of the ; union. The 1 appeak were adjourned sine die with • exemption from military service, pro'vided they remain, in. tfteir present occupations and report regularly to, the Group Commanders.- , . An adjournment for one month was granted John Wyllie Candlish, of tbe Blackball Coal-Company, for whom his employers' appealed, and the appeal ■of Stafford Meredith Brown,_of- tho 's.s: Flora, was adjourned sine die, provided he remains in his present occupation. ' •

; John James Skinner, who appeared in uniform, asked for. a rehearing of Jiis appeal, which the board granted after hearing evidence. Mr. H;. F. O'Leary appeared for appellant, who stated that he had. been a shearer for about nine years, and for the past Tour seasons worked in Australia as ■well as Now Zealand. Last season his shearing record in New Zealand was 13,000 sheep. His average was 200 a day. and had got as high as 300. He <>xplained how he failed to get his appeal in in time. He had been in camp about-four months. ■ ' ,i

'The appeal was adjourned sine die, provided appellant engages in farming or other essential work, and reports regularly to the Group Commander:. _ The appeal of Peter Neville, shearer, •Napier, which, was supported by Mr. Grayndler, secretary of- the Agricultual and Pastoral Workers' Union, was adjourned, sine die,- subject to. his engaging in farming or other essential w;ork, and reporting regularly to his Group Commander... ,'.•■. Private Thurston, of the 27th Reinforcement, applied for temporary exemption, and was granted a week's leave. Archibald Alfred Oolquhouu, fitter's apprentice, also applied for temporary oxemption, but as he did not appear there was no recommendation made. .

"_ William Henry , Davies, engineer, Harland Street, Brooklyn,.appealed on the ground that he was not a reservist, having gone into camp-with the 27th Reinforcement. The case was adjourned for inquiries to bo made. The appeals by employers on behalf of Henry William Price, bootmaker, Roseneath,and of Thomas Ward, bootmaker, 14. Crawford- Terrace, partly heard at previous sittings, occupied a considerable part of the afternoon. The grounds-of appeal-were-that both men were engaged in essential industries. Price, it was stated, worked a lasting machine,, which was the pivot of .the team-work in the faotory. . The board inspected the machine, and after hearing the evidence, adjourned' the appeal on behalf of Price for two months, provided, he continues in his present occupation. The appeal ou behalf of Thomas (Ward was dismissed. Mr. Putnam appeared for the parties. In respect to the appeal of Joseph Henry Patrick Thomas, a printer's apprentice, which was partly heard the previous day, Mr; Louis Wliitcombo, director of. Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd., appeared, and stated that appellant was apprenticed to his firm, and had 18 months ,to serve to complete Jiis time. The firm would be quite willing to take him hack when he returned from the front and, allow him to finish his time. As the appellant was a keen worker, he_ would , probably he reinstated on journeyman's wages. The board will Tesume its sittings at 10 o'clock this morning.
