NEW CAMP BAKERY
BEING ERECTED AT TRBNTHAM.' Since the field bakery at Trentham Camp was established under Staff-Ser-geant AVeldon, in May, 1916, it has grown considerably, and the latest addition to this department of tho A.S.C. at Trentham will be a largo permanent camp bakery. The first bakery was en purely service lines. The ovens were in the open, and the bread wns stored in a marquee, the only wooden structure being the-bakehouse, where tho dough was made into loaves. Since then tho ovens have been roofed oyer, to shelter the bakers in wet weather, when taking the bread out of the ovons. A wooden bread store has replaced the marquee, and a fuel store was another addition.
Besides providing a means of training for the A.S.C. bakers who leave with each Reinforcement, this field bakery has hiked all the bread required • by tho troops in earfto since, the bakery W2s established. It has bseu decided now to use the fisld bakery for training purposes only, and, to bake the camp bread in ;;■ bakery. Tho foundations of this brick building are complete::, and thn work of fitting in thn furnaces aiid .fines is proceeding. While it will bo constructed on somewhat similar lines to the bakery at ■ Feathers ton. there will be soma- new features, the experience gained at Featherston being profited by. The bakery is expected to he completed in about two months' time. In tho meantime the work of baking for the camp continues in tho field bakery. This busy place was visited by Sir James Allen during his inspection of the camp last week, when he complimented the staff on the cleanliness of the hakery and tho quality of tho break baked.
