RAILWAY BALLOT APPEALS

CHARGE OF INCONSISTENCY.

Before the Third Military Service Board on Saturday the Railway Department laid itself open to a charge of inconsistency in connection with appeals for exemption of railway servants. It has been the rule of tha Department to appeal for practically all its servants, on the ground that they were necessary for the continuance of the present train services. Some time ago the Military Board exempted a railway employee on this ground, and on Saturday the board received a letter from the General Manager of the Department asking for a review of the case, it being ascertained that the man was a conscientious objector, and under the circumstances the Department had no desire to support hi 3 a The'chairman (Mr. W. H. S. Moorhouse) remarked: "Wo should imagine■ a man was just as essential to tho Department whether ho was or was not a conscientious objector." Mr. Johu Bevin, who represented the Department,' said tho Department looked upon this man as a shirker, and it would not support the appeal of a I shirker. , The chairman: Your attitude is praiseworthy, but hardly consistent. How can you sparo the man now any more than you could spare before? Mr. Mack (a member of tho board;: We were asked to oxompfc him hecauso he was necessary for carrying on tho work of the Department; now, because you have discovered ho is a conscientious objector, you say you can sparo the man. Mr. Bevin: Wo did not know ho was unwilling to sorvo when wo applied for exemption. We could, of course, Tefuso to employ him. Mr. Mack: IF ho leaves' the servic* ho must go into camp. The chairman: The exemption must continue iiuless you give him the sack.. The application for a rehearing was not entertained.
