GOLF

JOHNSONVILLE CLUB. The Johnsonvillo Golf Club opened tho season on Saturday. The weather was fine, tho linkß were in good order, and there was a large attendance of members and visitors. In tho absence _of tho president (Mr. who is suffering from the effects or. an accident, the vice-president (Mr. Trewoek) declared the links open for play. He made a few appropriate remarks, in the course of which he referred to tho fact that many of tho mombors of the club had enlisted, and ho expressed tho hope that the club would bo kept going till tho boys in khaki came back from the war. A number of competitions then took jplaco. much interest being displayed in tho various evonts. Tho men's driving contest was won by Mr. A. Mooro (227yd5.), and Mr. P. Bourkc won the approaching and putting, holing out Tho ladies' driving was won by Miss B. Prico (150 yds.), Miss Turner (149 yds.) being second. Tho ladies' approaching and putting resulted in a very keen, contest. Mrs. Birschberg and Miss Batham tied, and fia'cTto play off four timos before Mrs. Hirschberg was declared the winner. No prizes wore presented, in view of the fact that it is war tinie. An abundant and most enjoyable afternoon tea, provided by the lady members, was dispensed by Mesdames Wallis and Morgan. Members were glad of the opportunity of greeting their captain, Mr. Dunbar Sloane, who is a member of the staff of the hospital ship Marama, and is spending a few days in Wellington.

THE HUTT CLUB. The annual meeting of the Hutt Golf Club was presided over by Mr. R. O. Kirk. There were fifteen members present. The election of officers resulted a3 follows:—Captain, Mr. R. C. Kirk (re-elected); committee, Messrs. T. C Dawson (re-elected), G. H. Scales (reelected), Graham Harvey, and H. S. Manning; secretary, Mr. W. J. Gardner (re-elected). A vote of thanks to the retiring members of the committee wEo~3id not seek re-electioii was passed'; also a vote of appreciation to the secretary (Mr. W. J. Gardner) for the manner in which he had carried out his duties. It was decided 1 t& arrange for a deputation to wait upon the local bodies who have rating rights over the links, with a view to getting- some consideration in the matter of the heavy rates now charged on the club's property. It is expected that the season will be opened shortly after Easter. -i
