The reason why oversea freights are high is forcibly illustrated in a letter received by Messrs. Lane and ol Sydney, by the last mall, in connection 1 with the charter and subsequent sale of j the Norwegian steamer Titania. This res- I sel, a cargo-carrier pure and simple, well | known in the Australian trade, was se- 1 cured by Mr. Madrigal, on American, for a long time charter, and he was fortunate to have the option of purohase jai- , £25,000. This option he exercised, arid I resold the .steamer to Norway for £200,000. I In the meantime, he made a very hand- | some profit on the charter* roughly estl- I mated at £100,000. The charterer origin- j ally ' secured the vessel at the rate of 3s. 6d. per ton. lie lost on the first year, but made an enormous turnover , following the outbreak of war. It is inter- , esting to note that while the Titania van originally chartered at 55. 6d. per ton, tho rate for old Japanese boats' delivery in Japan -was reoently 425. fid. per ton, the charterer paying war insurauce.
