LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

THE PRICE OF MILK

Sir, —Kindly grant mo space for a few remarks bearing upon 'the various speeches at the City Couucil meeting last week regarding the shortage of milk. To commence with, Mr. Luke romarked _ that the council should b'fi cliary of interfering with the business of the marble ,bavs, as it kept young; mon from resorting to other ' moro harmful places (meaning, of course, tile hotels). What percentage of the young men using these places would resort to the hotels if the marble bars s were closed ? A very small one. No, Mr. Luke put it down to the real reason, viz., there is too much trade influence at the back of it. Another councillor remarked that the cost of delivery equalled the wholesale price, paid to the farmer. Another fallacy, as you cannot reckon freightage charges as cost of delivery. . Even if you do, it is rather under tie mark. The Board of Trade's action in refusing permission to farmers to fix winter price at Is. per gallon -will do a deal of harm, as much more milk would be released for town consumption if the advance to Is. was allowed, and this could bo paid, without advancing tho retail price. Most milk vendors would gladly pay it, if they could only obtain the milk. , There has been too great a until recently, between tho price charged to the hotel and boaroinghouso-keeper, and the ' private consumer, even now there is room for improvement in this direction, as it means that the working man has to help pay for the others supply. Hoping you will excuse this long letter. —I am, etc., FAIR PRICE. [The announcement has been made that the wholesale priocv of milk for the winter months will he Is. OJd.J
